INTRODUCTION

This is the first edition of “Thede Family History” which focuses on direct ancestors of the paternal grandfather of Diane (Thede) Casey and their descendants.  Among these are the author’s oldest known ancestors:  Heinrich Thede (born 1796), Jacob Aubil (born 1815), Christian Stubi (born 1774), Christian Gerber (born 1720’s), Johannes Schmutz (born 1764) and Jacob Thomas (born 1740s).  Also included are small sections on the paternal grandmother of Diane (Thede) Casey, Swedish lines of Peterson and Johnson, and the maternal grandparents of Diane (Thede) Casey, German line of Santelmann.

The authors of this manuscript are experienced genealogists and have previously published four family histories.  Robert Casey and his father, Harold Casey, published “Casey Family History” in 1980 and “Shelton, Wininger and Pace Families” in 1988.  Robert and his mother, Bernice (Brooks) Casey, published “Brooks Family History” in 1982 and “Olliff Family History” in 1992.  Also assisting on this manuscript are the author’s wife, Diane (Thede) Casey, and her parents, Kenneth and Eleanor Thede.  It is highly recommended that anyone wishing to preserve their Thede family history promptly write the authors and contribute any information in their possession.  We are specially interested in copies of older photographs, family history recorded in Family Bibles, existing family history sketches, genealogical correspondence which contain a significant quantity of information, letters and diaries written prior to 1900, older legal documents, census records as well as recent additions to your families.

Information has been obtained from many sources and references are listed with each family sketch to aid future research on the “Thede Family History.”  Much of the history of the Thede family is incomplete.  Additional information is greatly appreciated and will be included in future editions of this publication.  Much information received by the authors on our family history has been copied and revised several times prior to its inclusion in our publication.  The authors have learned from experience that copying and interpreting usually results is less accurate information.  Additionally, primary sources of valuable information as well as critical information are lost in this process.  If a large amount of information is derived from another person or existing written material, then please send the name and address of the source or Xerox the existing material.  The authors can not under emphasize the need and usefulness of original source material.  There are many of our relatives who are interested in adding to our family history but do not know that this publication is being compiled.  Additional names and addresses of other interested family historians are very difficult to find without your help.

The numbering system used by the authors is based on the direct ancestors of the authors.  The oldest known direct Thede ancestor, Heinrich Thede, was assigned the number (1).  His son, John Thede, was the next generation of direct ancestors and was assigned the number (2).  The number assigned to other children, other than direct ancestors of the author, were derived by taking their Thede related parent and appending the number which represents the order of birth of his siblings.  A similar approach was used on the author’s related lines to the Thede family.  The oldest Aubil ancestor was assigned the number (11), the oldest Stubi/Steeby ancestor was assigned the number (31), the oldest Gerber/Garver ancestor was assigned the number (61) and the oldest Schmutz/Smutz ancestor was assigned the number (71).  Other numbers that are missing were reserved for the author’s other lines that have not been researched to date.  The authors of this manuscript are fortunate to have located several books relating to their ancestors.  Some of these books are still available for sale from the following authors:
