CHRISTIAN STÜBI (31)

Christian Stübi is the oldest known Stübi/Steeby ancestor of the authors.  It is known that he had one son born in 1774 in Wattenwill, Canton Bern, Switzerland so it can be estimated that Christian Stübi, Sr. was born in Switzerland in the 1740’s.  Christian probably married in 1760’s but who he married is not known.  Parish registers show that Christian Stübi was the father of at least one son:

Christian Stübi probably died in Switzerland.

CHRISTIAN STÜBI, JR. (32) is the son of Christian Stübi.  Christian was baptized in Wattenwill, Canton Bern, Switzerland on November 27, 1774, therefore, Christian was probably born in Wattenwill in 1774.  On March 17, 1797, Christian Stübi married Elisabeth Zimmermann.  Elisabeth was baptized on February 7, 1779 in Wattenwill, Switzerland.  Christian and Elisabeth Stübi were the parents of at least six children:

   Freidrich Stübi, bapt. November 19, 1815, Wattenwill, Switzerland

It is known that Christian Stübi drove a dray drawn by horses between various cities in Switzerland.  This was the only means of transporting goods during the seventeen and eighteen hundreds.  Elisabeth (Zimmermann) Stübi died in Wattenwill, Switzerland on August 23, 1835 and Christian Stübi died in Wattenwill, Switzerland on February 23, 1859.  On July 22, 1836, Christen Stübi married Catarina Zimmermann.  In 1824, Elisabeth Stübi married Friedrich Schweizer, a citizen of Allmendinge.  Friedrich Stübi died in Wattenwill on November 1, 1829.

GOTTLIEB STÜBI (32.5) is the son of Christian Stübi and Elisabeth (Zimmermann) Stübi.  Gottlieb was born on July 13, 1813 in the municipality of Wattenwill, Canton of Bern, Switzerland.  On February 8, 1833, Gottlieb Stübi married Maria Schwendimann in Wattenwill, Switzerland.  Maria “Mary” was born in 1807 in Switzerland.  In 1835, Gottlieb and his brother, Johannes, immigrated to United States.  In 1840, Gottlieb “Steeby” was was living Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  In 1850, Gottlieb and Mary Steeby were living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  This census indicates that Gottlieb and Mary Steeby were the parents of at least four children:

In early life, Gottlieb Stübi worked at the millwright’s trade, but later was a furniture dealer in Ragersville, Ohio.  Gottlieb Stübi, Sr. died in Ragersville, Ohio in 1867.  In 1870, Mary (Schwendimann) Steeby was living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  “Lizzie” Steeby married a Mr. Snyder but died leaving no descendants.  Mary Steeby married a Mr. Sloughman who died at the of age of 34, leaving six children.  One daughter, Lenora (Sloughman) Gibbon, lives in Zanesville, Ohio.

GOTTLIEB STEEBY, JR. (32.5.1) is the son of Gottlieb Steeby and Mary (Schwendimann) Steeby.  Gottlieb was born on February 17, 1834 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  In 1853, Gottlieb Steeby moved to Savannah, Missouri.  On April 12, 1857, Gottlieb Steeby married Mary Moser in Savannah, Missouri.  Mary was born on April 1, 1839 in Canton of Bern, Switzerland and is the daughter of Peter Moser and Mary Ann (Briet) Moser.  Gottlieb and Mary Steeby had fourteen children (one son known):

There are around 300 living descendants of Gottlieb and Mary Steeby.  Mary (Moser) Steeby died on July 26, 1893 in Andrew County, Missouri and Gottleib Steeby died on November 8, 1913 in Andrew County, Missouri.  Both were buried in the German Reformed Church Cemetery at Amazonia, Missouri.

JOHN SHERMAN STEEBY (32.5.1.1) is the son of Gottlieb Steeby, Jr. and Mary (Moser) Steeby.  John was born on March 26, 1865 in Andrew County, Missouri.  On May 30, 1886, John Steeby married Mattie Childs Hardin in Amazonia, Missouri.  Mattie was born on November 19, 1895 in Fillmore, Missouri and is the daughter of Richard Simpson Hardin and Malena Rachel (Patton) Hardin.  John and Mattie Steeby were the parents of at least one daughter:

Mattie (Hardin) Steeby died on September 17, 1940 in Labette County, Kansas and John S. Steeby died on August 31, 1946 in Labette County, Kansas.

MARY ELIZABETH STEEBY (32.5.1.1.1) is the daughter of John Sherman Steeby and Mattie Childs (Hardin) Steeby.  Mary was born on June 10, 1895 in Fillmore, Missouri.  On September 18, 1910, Mary Steeby married Orman Ellis.  Orman was born on September 29, 1890 in Ballard, Arkansas and is the son of William Jefferson Ellis and Judah Louisa (Smith) Ellis.  Orman and Mary Ellis were the parents of ten children:

OSBERN KENNETH ELLIS (32.5.1.1.1.2) is the son of Orman Ellis and Mary Elizabeth (Steeby) Ellis.  Osbern was born on January 28, 1914 in Ballard, Arkansas.  Osbern Ellis married Lucille Virginia Blair.  Lucille is the daughter of William Joseph Blair and Eva Mae (Garber) Blair.  Osbern and Lucille Ellis were the parents of three chldren:

JOHANNES STÜBI (33) is the son of Christian Stübi and Elisabeth (Zimmermann) Stübi.  Johannes was born in 1810 in the municipality of Wattenwill, Canton of Bern, Switzerland.  On July 10, 1835, Johannes and his brother, Gottlieb, left Switzerland and immigrated to United States.  On December 27, 1837, Johannes Stübi, married Catherine Buehler in Ohio.  Catherine was born on April 3, 1813 in Wattenwill, Canton of Bern, Switzerland.  In 1840, John “Steeby” was listed in the 1840 census of Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  From 1850 to 1860, John and Catherine “Steeby” were listed in the 1850 census of Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  John and Catherine Steeby were the parents of nine children:

JOHN STEEBY (33.1) is the son of John Steeby and Catherine (Buehler) Steeby.  John was born on April 21, 1839 in Ohio.  On August 10, 1865, John Steeby married Ann McGrevy (born May, 1847 in Ireland).  The 1900 census indicates that Ann immigrated to United States in 1865.  John and Ann Steeby were the parents of seven children:

KATE STEEBY (33.1.2) is the daughter of John Steeby and Ann (McGrevy) Steeby.  Kate was born on September 4, 1868 in Allegan County, Michigan.  Kate Steeby married William Thompson.  William and Kate Thompson were the parents of two children:

JOHN FREDERICK STEEBY (33.1.3) is the son of John Steeby and Ann (McGrevy) Steeby.  John was born on August 1, 1870 in Michigan.  On February 27, 1895, John Steeby married Susie Thaler (born October, 1874 in Michigan).  John and Susie Steeby were the parents of three children:

   Leone R. Steeby, b. May 31, 1898, Michigan
   Lloyd Steeby, b. December 24, 1909

In 1900, John and Susie Steeby were living in Allegan County, Michigan.  Susie (Thaler) Steeby died on October 11, 1951 and John Steeby died on April 23, 1953.  Harold Steeby married Mildred Schad and they had two children:  -  Robert William Steeby, b. October 9, 1922,  -  Patricia Yvonne Steeby, b. May 6, 1926.  Harold Steeby died on November 2, 1955.  On February 7, 1925, Leone Steeby married Arthur Smith and they had one daughter:  -  Arleon Widener Smith, b. December 20, 1925.  Arthur Smith died in 1975.  On July 15, 1930, Lloyd Steeby married Geraldine Edwards of Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Lloyd Steeby died on December 14, 1973.

ELLEN STEEBY (33.1.5) is the daughter of John Steeby and Ann (McGrevy) Steeby.  Ellen was born on June 12, 1874.  On March 20, 1923, Ellen Steeby married Albert Brog and they were the parents of two children:

   Edward Wayne Brog, b. November 17, 1912

Albert Brog died on June 12, 1915 and Ellen (Steeby) Brog died on October 5, 1961.  On March 20, 1923, Beatrice Brog married Forrest Fenwick and they had two children:  -  Florence Louise Fenwick, b. February 5, 1924,  -  Charles Albert Fenwick, b. February 10, 1927.  Beatrice (Brog) Fenwick died on January 2, 1960 and Forrest Fenwick died on March 9, 1971.  On September 10, 1949, Edward Brog married Marian “Billy” Christensen and they have two children:  -  Molly Jane Brog, b. AGNES AMANDA STEEBY (33.1.6) is the daughter of John Steeby and Ann (McGrevy) Steeby.  Agnes was born on December 6, 1878.  On March 27, 1901, Agnes Steeby married Henry Brog and they were the parents of two children:

Henry Brog died on June 15, 1956 and Agnes (Steeby) Brog died on September 19, 1963.  On June 24, 1929, Clair Brog married Dorothy Taber and they have two children:  -  Helen Jean Brog, b. July 31, 1931,  -  Kenneth Clair Brog, b. September 27, 1935.  On November 21, 1942, Helen Brog married Kenneth Vogel.

MAGGIE L. STEEBY (33.1.7) is the daughter of John Steeby and Ann (McGrevy) Steeby.  Maggie was born on May 17, 1879 in Allegan County, Michigan.  On December 15, 1897, Maggie Steeby married Leonard A. Hooker.  Leonard and Maggie Hooker were the parents of four children:

June 12, 1925,  -  Charles Leonard Fisher, b. July 21, 1932,  -  Sara Lee Fisher, b. March 22, 1938.  Earl Fisher died on November 4, 1967.  On March 13, 1936, Anna Hooker married Ivan D. MARY STEEBY (33.3.1) is the daughter of John Steeby and Catherine (Buehler) Steeby.  Mary was born on February 14, 1867 in Michigan.  On March 26, 1891, Mary Steeby married John Kaechele.  John and Mary Kaechele were the parents of nine children:

Mary (Steeby) Kaechele died on April 15, 1927 and John Kaechele died on December 23, 1942.  Ida Kaechele lived with her father on his farm for several years after her mother’s death.  Ida then moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Ida Kaechele died on October 28, 1978.  On September 22, 1917, Carl Kaechele married Ethel Muriel Harper and they had two children:  -  William Harper Kaechele, b. June 23, 1921,  -  Ruth Mary Kaechele, b. February 14, 1925.  On September 12, 1918, Walter Kaechele married Virginia Braun and they had one son:  -  Walter Irving Kaechele, II, b. June 10, 1920.  Virginia (Braun) died on February 18, 1967.  On January 22, 1968, Walter Kaechele married a second time to Wilma Dentler Oldorff.  Walter Kaechele died on February 10, 1979.  On March 20, 1926, Oscar Kaechele married Florence Harper and they had three children:  -  John Phillip Kaechele, b. February 13, 1927,  -  Mary Alice Kaechele, b. March 15, 1929,  -  Doris Avonne Kaechelle, b. March 14, 1932.  Oscar Kaechele died on June 20, 1980 and Florence (Harper) Kaechele died on May 17, 1982.

December 16, 1946.  Cheryl Sue Kaechele married Kenneth Warren Thede (2.2.1.1.2).  On June 14, 1930, Marguerite Kaechele married Floyd Arthur Harper and they had four children:  -  Barbara Jean Harper, b. November 23, 1947, White Plains, New York.  Floyd Harper died on April 21, 1973.  On July 11, 1931, Aaron Kaechele married Wilma Oldorf and they had three children:  -  Nancy Ann Kaechele, b. WILLIAM E. STEEBY (33.3.4) is the son of Frederick Steeby and Margaret (Brog) Steeby.  William was born on December 13, 1873 in Michigan.  On January 12, 1898, William Steeby married Rozella V. Thaler (born October 1876 in Michigan).  William and Rozella Steeby were the parents of six children:

Steeby died on September 24, 1948.  Hazen Steeby died as a child on March 12, 1901.  On June 24, 1925, Rita Steeby married Carl W. Katz.  On July 1, 1933, Gerald Steeby married Ruth Marshall.  Gerald Steeby died on March 19, 1955.  On June 24, 1925, Alice Steeby married Lyle A. Garfield and they had four children:  -  Ilene Mildred Garfield, b. November 25, 1927,  -  Marilyn June Garfield, b. June 23, 1929,  -  William Lyle Garfield, b. DAVID STEEBY (33.6) is the son of John Steeby and Catherine (Buehler) Steeby.  David was born on January 12, 1850 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  On January 1, 1875, David Steeby married Katherine Eilber (born January, 1853 in Germany).  David and Katherine Steeby were the parents of four children:

From 1900 to 1910, David and Catherine Steeby were living in Allegan County, Michigan.  Katherine (Eilber) Steeby died on September 24, 1921 and David Steeby died on April 10, 1924.  On February 19, 1902, Fred Steeby married Lena Ada Waldeck (born October 9, 1875 in Pomerlin, Germany).  Fred and Lena Steeby had two children:  -  Clarence Albert Steeby, b. March 26, 1903,  -  Ruth Agnes Steeby, b. May 21, 1910.  Lena (Waldeck) Steeby died on October 29, 1938.  On November 19, 1941, Fred Steeby married a second time to Lillian Wing.  Lillian (Wing) Steeby died in February, 1957 and Fred Steeby died on July 29, 1957.  On February 12, 1902, Mary Steeby married Charles Albert Barrell and they had one daughter:  -  Dorothy Florence Barrell, b. December 5, 1903.  Charles Barrell died on September 5, 1926 and Mary (Steeby) Barrell died on September 2, 1878.

On June 15, 1904, Lydia Steeby married Carl Frederick Gackler and they had one daughter:  -  Ferna Ruth Gackler, b. August 11, 1911.  Carl Gackler died on April 28, 1918 and Lydia (Steeby) Gackler died on November 10, 1944.  On December 16, 1908, Otilla Steeby married Melvin Shoemaker and they had one daughter:  -  Alice Lucille Shoemaker, b. March 16, 1919.  Otilla (Steeby) Shoemaker died on June 17, 1957 and Melvin Shoemaker died on August 9, 1961.

RUDOLPH JOHN STEEBY (33.8) is the son of John Steeby and Catherine (Buehler) Steeby.  Rudolph was born on January 4, 1854 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  On March 15, 1874, Rudolph Steeby married Mary Ann Aubil (12.5).  Mary was born in 1856 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and is the daughter of Jacob Aubil and Mary (Garver) Aubil.  Mary’s brother, John Aubil, married Rudolph’s sister, Rosa Steeby.  Rudolph and Mary Steeby were the parents of six children:

In 1868, Rudolph and Mary Steeby moved to Allegan County, Michigan.  Mary Ann (Aubil) Steeby died on September 16, 1899.  In 1900, Rudolph Steeby was living with his children in Allegan County, Michigan.  On December 11, 1902, Rudolph Steeby married a second time to Lydia Adams (born May 16, 1858).  Rudolph Steeby died on March 30, 1925 and Lydia (Adams) Steeby died at the age of 102 on November 18, 1960.  On May 14, 1900, Ada Steeby married George Roscoe Smith and they had five children:  -  Elgin Roscoe Smith, b. May 31, 1903,  -  Asa Rudolph Smith, b. April 11, 1905,  -  Russel John Smith, b. March 6, 1908,  -  Mary Elizabeth Smith, b. September 1, 1909,  -  Irma Ada Smith, b. July 28, 1911.  George Smith died on February 2, 1918 and Ada (Steeby) Smith died on May 14, 1950.  On May 27, 1903, Ervin Steeby married Clara M. December 10, 1906.  Clara (Borg) Steeby died on April 7, 1913.  On August 10, 1917, Ervin Steeby married a second time to Pansy P. Mesick and they had one daughter:  -  Mary Lois Steeby, b. January 8, 1922.  Ervin Steeby died on March 7, 1950 and Pansy (Mesick) Steeby died in 1970.

October 26, 1915.  Effie (Parker) Steeby died in October of 1930 and Ernest Steeby died on December 1, 1930.  Elva Steeby married William F. Frey (born May 27, 1896) and they had five children:  -  William Zale Frey, b. January 19, 1922,  -  Elizabeth Mae Frey, b. April 28, 1923,  -  Helen Pauline Frey, b.
