JOHANNES SMUTZ (71)

Johannes Schmutz/Smutz is the oldest known Smutz ancestor of the authors.  Schmutz was anglicized to Smutz.  Johannes Smutz was born on September 29, 1764.  On September 22, 1792, a Johannes Smutz emigrated to America from Amsterdam on the ship, Henricus.  It is not known if this was the same person as the author’s ancestor, Johannes Smutz.  Johannes Smutz married Anna Thomas (82).  Anna was born in April of 1774 and is the daughter of Jacob Thomas.  For additional information on the descendants of Jacob Thomas, see the sketch of Jacob Thomas.  From 1830 to 1840, John “Smootz/Smuts” (born 1760 to 1770) was living in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  Johannes and Anna Smutz were the parents of ten children:

The will (Will Book 2, Page 268) of Johannes Smutz of Bullskin Township was dated on January 20, 1830 and was recorded on November 25, 1842.  Johannes Smutz died on October 29, 1842.  In 1850, Anna (Thomas) Smutz was living with her son, Joseph Smutz, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  The will (Will Book 3, Page 127) of Anna “Schmutz” of Bullskin Township was dated on October 19, 1852 and was recorded on October 31, 1854.  Anna (Thomas) Smutz died on April 26, 1854.

Magelena Smutz married Henry (John) Kamstrick/Kenestric.  Magelena (Smutz) Kamstrick died in 1846.  Catherine Smutz married John Wiland.  Catherine (Smutz) Wiland died in 1831.  In 1840, Joseph “Smuts” (born 1790 to 1800) was living next to his father, John, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  In 1850, Joseph Smutz was living with his mother, Anna (Thomas) Smutz in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  Joseph Smutz died, unmarried, on March 12, 1872 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  The will (Will Book 4, Page 389) of Joseph “Schmutz” of Bullskin Township was dated on February 15, 1872 and recorded on March 18, 1872.

In 1826, Anna Smutz married Abraham Ebersole (Christian’s second marriage).  Abraham was born on June 9, 1793 in Swatara, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and is the son of Abraham Ebersole (born 1750) and Eva (Stauffer) Ebersole (born 1751).  Abraham Ebersole was previously married to Mary Galloway (born 1818 in Pennsylvania) and Anna Brechbill (born 1801).  Anna (Smutz) Ebersole died in 1840.  Abraham Ebersole died on June 8, 1869 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

In 1850, Elizabeth Smutz was living with her mother, Anna (Thomas) Smutz in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.  Elizabeth Smutz died, unmarried, in 1886.  Christina Smutz is a direct ancestor of the authors.  Christina Smutz married George Garver (64), another direct ancestor of the authors.  For additional information on the descendants of George and Christina Garver, see the sketch of George Garver (64).  Johannes Smutz, Jr. died in 1861.  Fanny Smutz married a Mr. Spone.  Fanny (Smutz) Spone died in 1844.

JACOB SMUTZ (71.2) is the son of Johannes Smutz and Anna (Thomas) Smutz.  Jacob was born in 1797 in Pennsylvania.  From 1830 to 1860, Jacob and his wife, Mary Smutz (born 1804 in Pennsylvania), were living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  Jacob and Mary Smutz were the parents of at least of six children:

   Joseph Smutz (71.2.3), b. 1835, Ohio
   Daughter, b. 1830 - 1835
   Daughter, b. 1830 - 1835

Jacob Smutz died in 1865.  Robert Smutz married Emily Hoopengarner and they moved to either Michigan or Indiana.

JOSEPH SMUTZ (71.2.3) is the son of Jacob Smutz and Mary Smutz.  Joseph was born in 1835 in Ohio.  Joseph Smutz married Elizabeth Hoselten (born 1837 in Ohio).  Joseph and Elizabeth Smutz were the parents of four children:

   Elizabeth Smutz, b. 1860, Ohio
   Mary M. Smutz, b. 1860, Tuscarawas County, Ohio
   Emma M. Smutz, b. 1872, Tuscarawas County, Ohio
   Clara F. Smutz, b. 1875, Tuscarawas County, Ohio

From 1860 to 1880, Joseph Smutz and Elizabeth Smutz were living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  Mary Smutz married a Mr. Straus.  In 1942, Emma Smutz was living, unmarried, in New York City.  Clara Smutz married a Mr. Wolf and they had four children:  -  Bernice Wolf,  -  Mildred Wolf,  -  Myra Wolf,  -  Roy Wolf.

GEORGE SMUTZ (71.2.6) is the son of Jacob Smutz and Mary Smutz.  George was born in 1836 in Dover, Ohio.  George Smutz married Elmira Shank (born 1841 in Ohio) and they were the parents of at least two children:

   Oliver Frank Smutz, b. 1876, Ohio

From 1870 to 1880, George and Elmira Smutz were living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

CHARLES TILMAN SMUTZ (71.2.6.1) is the son of George Smutz and Elmira (Shank) Smutz.  Charles was born on October 3, 1869 in Ohio.  Charles Smutz married Jennie C. E. Stockdale (born 1870 near Dover, Ohio) and they were the parents of six children:

   Harold Perry Smutz, b. November 24, 1895, Ohio
   Melva May Smutz, b. November 24, 1898, Ohio
   Nora Jane Smutz, b. August 3, 1900, Ohio
   Earl Charles Smutz, b. August 25, 1904, Ohio
   Roy Tilman Smutz, b. May 1, 1909, Ohio

In 1910, Charles and Jennie Smutz were living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  Charles Smutz died on June 11, 1915.  Walter Smutz married Eva E. Overholt and they lived in New Philadelphia, Ohio.  Harold Smutz married Clara Helen Espenschied and they have one daughter:  -  Pauline Elizabeth Smutz, b. March 1, 1925.  Harold and Clara Smutz lived in Dover, Ohio.  Melva Smutz died on August 10, 1921.  In 1942, Nora Smutz was living, unmarried, in Dover, Ohio.  Earl Smutz married Gladys Lucile Roser and they have two daughters:  -  Betty Jane Smutz, b. September 27, 1930,  -  Lois Jean Smutz, b. November 12, 1935.  In 1942, Earl and Gladys Smutz lived in Lima, Ohio.  Roy Smutz married Albertine Louise Blaser.  In 1942, Roy and Albertine Smutz were living in Dover, Ohio.

MARY SMUTZ (71.8) is the daughter of Johannes Smutz and Anna (Thomas) Smutz.  Mary was born on October 29, 1806.  Mary Smutz married George Harshman (born 1802 in Pennsylvania) and they were the parents of eight children:

   Sophia Harshman, b. 1839, Ohio
   Sarah Harshman
   Anne Harshman
   Joseph Harshman, b. 1842, Ohio

Mary (Smutz) Harshmam died on December 11, 1844.  From 1870 to 1880, George Harshman was living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  In 1880, Elizabeth Harshman was living with her father in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  In 1870, Joseph Harshman and his wife, Phoebe Harshman (born 1848, Ohio), were living in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.  In 1942, Jacob Harshman was living in Dover, Ohio.

JACOB THOMAS (81)

Jacob Thomas is the oldest known Thomas ancestor of the authors.  Jacob Thomas was the father of at least six children:

   Christian Thomas
   Isaac Thomas
   Jacob Thomas, Jr.
   Elizabeth Thomas
   Magdalena Thomas
   Anna Thomas (82), b. April, 1774

Jacob Thomas, Sr. signed his will on March 16, 1801 (Will Book 1, Page 54).  This will mentions a plantation in the Thomas Creek Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland.  Jacob Thomas, Jr. died prior to Jacob Thomas, Sr. signing his will in 1801.  Elizabeth Thomas married a Mr. Repley.  Magdalena Thomas married David Stuiler.  Anna Thomas is a direct ancestor of the authors.  Anna Thomas married Johannes “John” Smutz, another direct ancestor of the authors.  For additional information on the descendants of John and Anna Smutz, see the sketch of Johannes Smutz (71).

The Ancestral File contains what might be the ancestry of Jacob Thomas, Sr.  It shows a Jacob Thomas who is the son of Hans Michel Thomas and his wife, Barbara Thomas.  It further states that Jacob Thomas, Sr. was married to a woman named Susanna.  It shows that Jacob was born on June 11, 1747 and died on September 19, 1811 which is the proper period of time for what is known about Jacob Thomas.  The best evidence for connection of the author’s Thomas line to that found in the Ancestral File is that both resided in the same county, Frederick County, Maryland.  Additionally, it is known that the author’s Jacob Thomas wrote his will 1801 and that this will was later recorded in Frederick County, Maryland.
