SARAH SHELTON (1.8) is the daughter of John Shelton and Catherine (Messer) Shelton.  Sarah was born on December 2, 1817 in Virginia.  On March 19, 1843, Sarah Shelton married Robert Rains in Dekalb County, Alabama.  Robert was born on February 11, 1815 in Tennessee and is the son of John Rains.  Robert and Sarah Rains were the parents of eleven children:

In 1850, Robert and Sarah Rains were living in DeKalb County, Alabama.  In 1860, Robert and Sarah Rains were living in Marshall County, Alabama.  Sarah (Shelton) Rains died on July 28, 1883 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama.  On November 18, 1883, Robert Rains married a second time to Hannah Elizabeth Jane (Fricks) Leird.  Hannah was previously married to Lebrin Jackson Leird.  Hannah was born on December 23, 1836 in Anderson County, South Carolina and is the daughter of Christian Fricks and Cynthia (Harris) Fricks.  Robert Rains died on May 28, 1909 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama.  Hannah (Fricks) Rains died on March 6, 1921 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama.

Nancy Rains died in 1861 and was buried in the Groveoak, Marshall County, Alabama.  John B. Rains was buried in Groveoak, Marshall County, Alabama.  William Rains was buried in Groveoak, Marshall County, Alabama.  James R. Rains was buried in Groveoak, Marshall County, Alabama.  Mahala Rains married her first cousin, George Chapman Womack.  George was born on September 17, 1846 in Alabama and is the son of Jesse Womack and Sabra (Shelton) Womack.  For additional information on the descendants of George and Mahala Womack, see the sketch of George Chapman Womack (1.3.6).

The book, “Smith, Rains, Womack and Frick Familes,” include hundreds of descendants of Sarah Shelton (1.8) who married Robert Rains.  Only a few of these descendants are included in this publication and anyone wishing to obtain additional information on this Rains/Shelton line should purchase the above publication from Arnold Wilson, 1102 Elm Street, Albertville, Alabama 35950-2746.  This publication also contains descendants of Jesse Womack and his wife, Sabra.  There is a reasonable possibilty that Sabra was the sister of Sarah Shelton (1.8) who married Robert Rains.  If this connection is proven, the above publication would include hundreds more descendants of John Shelton and Catherine (Messer) Shelton.  The descendants of both Sarah Shelton and Sabra Shelton, represent just under half (246 pages out of 518 pages) of the content of the above publication.

MARY CATHERINE RAINS (1.8.1) is the daughter of Robert Rains and Sarah (Shelton) Rains.  Mary was born on January 1, 1844 in Dekalb County, Alabama.  On November 20, 1860, Mary Rains married Henry Smith in Marshall County, Alabama.  Henry was born on February 4, 1839 in Marshall County, Alabama and is the son of Dr. David Smith and Elizabeth (Ray) Smith.  Henry and Mary Smith were the parents of thirteen children:

From 1870 to 1880, Henry and Mary Smith were living in Marshall County, Alabama.  Henry Smith died on June 18, 1903 in Marshall County, Alabama and Mary (Rains) Smith died on March 19, 1925 in Marshall County, Alabama.  Both were buried in the Grove Oak Cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama.  John W. Smith died as a child on September 2, 1863.  On February 2, 1888, Sarah Smith married John Bryant.  John and Sarah Bryant had three children:  -  Katy Bryant, b. December, 1888,  -  John Henry Bryant, b. May 10, 1890,  -  Tommy Bryant.  Sarah (Smith) Bryant died on August 10, 1897.

David Smith married Mary Ida Johnson (born January 13, 1875).  David and Mary Smith had six children:  -  Amanda I. Smith, b. 1898,  -  Lutie Smith, b. 1900,  -  Lorrie Smith, b. 1902,  -  Jessie Smith, b. September 16, 1904,  -  Sam Henry Smith, b. August 9, 1907,  -  Ottis Smith, b. March 8, 1910.  David Smith died on June 30, 1933.  Susan Smith (b. 1866) died on July 6, 1900.

On December 9, 1891, Selena Smith married John Yancey Fricks.  John was born on July 23, 1868 in DeKalb County, Alabama and is the son of James Andrew Fricks and Maranda Elizabeth (Kirtland) Fricks.  Selena (Smith) Fricks died on November 21, 1951 in Groveoak, Alabama.  On November 15, 1894, Robert Smith married Sallie Traylor.  Sallie was born on August 27, 1875 in Bibb County, Georgia and is the daughter of Abner Hudson Traylor and Mary Catherine (Butts) Traylor.  Sallie’s brother, Henry Edward Traylor, married Robert Smith’s second cousin, Mary Emma Smith (1.3.8.3).  Robert Smith died on February 15, 1944.

On July 18, 1889, Mary Smith married Michael Marion Wilson in Alabama.  Michael was born on April 25, 1867 in Hall County, Georgia and is the son of William Oliver Wilson and Rhoda Hargrove (Mabry) Wilson.  Mary (Smith) Wilson died on May 14, 1954 in DeKalb County, Alabama.  On November 24, 1896, Mahala Smith married Thomas Christopher Fricks.  Thomas was born on January 7, 1872 in DeKalb County, Alabama and is the son of James Andrew Fricks and Maranda Elizabeth (Kirtland) Fricks.  Thomas’ brother, John Yancey Fricks married Mahala’s sister, Selena Smith.  Mahala (Smith) Fricks died on January 5, 1911.  On August 12, 1896, Louisa Smith married Robert Lee Wilson.  Robert was born on January 24, 1874 in Groveoak, Alabama and is the son of William Oliver Wilson and Rhoda Hargrove (Mabry) Wilson.  Robert’s brother, Michael Marion Wilson maried Louisa’s sister, Mary Smith.  Louisa (Smith) Wilson died on March 2, 1909.  James Smith died on April 5, 1902 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On November 4, 1903, William Smith married Lottie Idella Hawkins.  Lottie was born on October 26, 1881.  William Smith died on October 21, 1968.  Amanda Smith died as a child on June 21, 1888 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.

CALDONIA RAINS (1.8.5) is the daughter of Robert Rains and Sarah (Shelton) Rains.  Caldonia was born on December 6, 1850 in Groveoak, Dekalb County, Alabama.  On December 17, 1873, Caldonia Rains married Henry W. Sargent in Dekalb County, Alabama.  H. W. was born on July 13, 1840.  H. W. and Caldonia Sargent were the parents of two children:

  Sarah T. Sargent, b. September 8, 1875
  Mary E. Sargent, b. September 24, 1877

H. W. Sargent died on October 23, 1896 and was buried in Grove Oak, Dekalb County, Alabama.  Caldonia (Rains) Sargent died on November 23, 1930 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On November 11, 1891, Sarah Sargent married Robert H. Wilbanks in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Robert was born on September 17, 1869.  Sarah (Sargent) Wilbanks died in 1962.  On July 26, 1896, Mary Sargent married Harmon H. Wilbanks.  Harmon was born on April 14, 1871.  Harmon Wilbanks died on July 1, 1936 and Mary (Sargent) Wilbanks died on October 31, 1956.

THOMAS NATHANIEL RAINS (1.8.8) is the son of Robert Rains and Sarah (Shelton) Rains.  Thomas was born on November 22, 1856 in Dekalb County, Alabama.  On February 20, 1879, Thomas Rains married Syntha Evelin Mcleaird in Dekalb County, Alabama.  Syntha was born on February 21, 1861 in Georgia and is the daughter of Lebrin Jackson Mcleaird and Hannah Elizabeth Jane (Fricks) Mcleaird.  Thomas and Syntha Rains were the parents of thirteen children:

Rains died on October 5, 1900 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On November 23, 1902, Newton Rains married Emma Lounora Orr in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Emma was born on January 13, 1902 in DeKalb County, Alabama and is the daughter of Raymond D. Orr and Nancy Louvenie (Stapp) Orr.  Emma (Orr) Rains died on August 27, 1962 and Newton S. Rains died on April 18, 1965.  Both were buried in Henagar Baptist Church Cemetery in Henagar, Alabama.  Emma G. Rains died as a child on September 22, 1885 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On December 6, 1908, Daniel Rains married Ethel Elizabeth Stott in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Ethel was born on April 3, 1891.  Ethel (Stott) Rains died on September 15, 1962 and Daniel B. Rains died on December 14, 1978 in Fort Payne, Alabama.  Both were buried in Groveoak, Alabama.

On September 18, 1902, Beulah Rains married William Pinkney Hall in DeKalb County, Alabama.  William was born on October 17, 1878 and is the son of Stephen Hall and Rhoda (Stapp) Hall.  William P. Hall died on January 11, 1964 and Beulah (Rains) Hall died on January 17, 1982.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  On January 13, 1907, Sarah Rains married John Webb Gunter in DeKalb County, Alabama.  John was born on September 5, 1887.  John W. Gunter died on April 17, 1945 and Sarah (Rains) Gunter died on March 21, 1979.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  On December 24, 1905, Mary Rains married Charley Wesley Murdock in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Charley was born on September 28, 1883.  Mary (Rains) Murdock died on August 6, 1958 and Charley W. Murdock died on May 3, 1968.  Both were buried in the Fuller Cemetery in DeKalb County, Alabama.

On December 24, 1911, Florence Rains married William Henry Dollar in Marshall County, Alabama.  William was born on September 9, 1890 and is the son of John C. Dollar and Roxie A. (Donna) Dollar.  Florence (Rains) Dollar died on December 2, 1982 and William H. Dollar died on August 11, 1985.  Both were buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  On September 13, 1914, Theora Rains married Ira Eli Stott in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Ira was born in 1898.  Ira E. Stott died on July 7, 1966 and Theora (Rains) Stott died on August 20, 1974.  Both were buried in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County, Alabama.  On January 7, 1923, Freeman Rains married Tressie Mae Oliver.  Tressie was born on September 30, 1901 and is the daughter of Hannah Evina (Keener) Oliver.  Tressie (Oliver) Rains died on November 4, 1968 and Freeman F. Rains died on August 26, 1972.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  Luther Rains was killed by a lightning strike on June 24, 1923 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  Lucious Rains married Flora Richey.  Flora was born in 1907 and is the daughter of Monroe Richey and Hattie Lee (Edmondson) Richey.  Lucious L. Rains died on November 5, 1986 in Boaz, Alabama and was buried in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Albertville, Alabama.

GEORGE DEWEY RAINS (1.8.8.11) is the son of Thomas Nathaniel Rains and Syntha Evelin (Mcleaird) Rains.  George was born on February 14, 1900 in DeKalb County, Alabama.  George Rains married Cully B. Slaton.  Cully was born on February 11, 1914 in Marshall County, Alabama and is the daughter of Preston Henry Slaton and Luna (Cook) Slaton.  George and Cully Rains were the parents of two children:

  Eva Christine Rains, b. August 4, 1933

George D. Rains died on May 3, 1975 in Poplar Springs, Alabama and Cully (Slaton) Rains died on January 27, 1993 in Boaz, Alabama.  Both were buried in the Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Marshall County, Alabama.  Thomas P. Rains married Opal Wright.  Thomas and Opal Rains have one son:  -  Brenton Craig Brent Rains, b. March 24, 1961, Albertville, Alabama.  Brent Rains married Gaye Renee Eubanks (born November 4, 1961, Albertville, Alabama) and they have two children:  -  Jessica Renee Rains, b. ELBERT RAINS (1.8.9) is the son of Robert Rains and Sarah (Shelton) Rains.  Elbert was born on November 2, 1858 in Groveoak, Dekalb County, Alabama.  On September 13th, Elbert Rains married Florence J. Campbell.  Florence was born on October 2, 1861 and is the daughter of William Henry Campbell and Nancy C. (Mitchell) Campbell.  Elbert and Florence Rains were the parents of six children:

Elbert Rains died on November 16, 1910 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama.  Louella (Campbell) Rains died on May 10, 1963 in Talladega, Alabama and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County, Alabama.  On September 14, 1910, Wallace G. Rains married Ola Hamrick in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Ola was born on December 14, 1887.  Ola (Hamrick) Rains died on May 9, 1919 and was buried in the Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, Alabama.  Wallace G. Rains married a second time to Nellie Chelnessa Lawrence (born December 11, 1888).  Wallace G. Rains died on December 3, 1949 and was buried in the Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, Alabama.  Charley E. Rains died as a child in June of 1889 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Dekalb County, Alabama.

On September 30, 1911, Jesse B. Rains married Annie Lou Millirons in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Annie was born in 1892 in Geraldine, Alabama and is the daughter of John L. Millirons and Gertrude E. (Smith) Millirons.  Annie (Millirons) Rains died on March 22, 1950 and Jesse B. Rains died on May 27, 1963 in Fort Payne, Alabama.  Both were buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Fort Payne, Alabama.  John R. Rains married Myra Noles.  John R. Rains died on June 12, 1969 in North Little Rock, Arkansas.  On January 16, 1916, Minnie Rains married Lod Milford Baxter in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Lod was born in 1895.  Lod Baxter died on July 26, 1941.  Minnie (Rains) Baxter died on July 23, 1971 in Fort Payne, Alabama and was buried there in the Glenwood Cemetery.  On April 25, 1927, Claude Rains married Mamie Lee Evans (born August 13, 1906).  Claude M. Rains died on September 5, 1969 in Fort Payne, Alabama and was buried in Fort Payne, Alabama.

On December 29, 1939, Albert Rains married Allison Blair.  Allison was born in Centre, Alabama and is the daughter of John H. Blair and Jennie (Johnson) Blair.  Albert Rains served in the United States House of Representatives.  Albert Rains died in Gadsden, Alabama and was buried there.  Magnolia Rains married Willis Alexander Michaels.  Willis was born on March 16, 1897 and is the son of Frederick Alexander Michaels and Mary Emmaline (Moore) Michaels.  Willis Michaels died on October 7, 1986 in Talladega, Alabama.  Wallace E. Rains died on February 19, 1984 in Fort Payne, Alabama and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  Elma Rains married Noble J. Waldon.  Elma (Rains) Waldon died on February 1, 1987 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  Alma Rains died as an infant in November of 1910 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.

ALBERT RAINS (1.8.10) is the son of Robert Rains and Sarah (Shelton) Rains.  Albert was born on November 2, 1858 in Groveoak, Dekalb County, Alabama.  On January 26, 1879, Albert Rains married Lucinda S. Barnes in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Lucinda was born on May 4, 1862 in Marshall County, Alabama and is the daughter of John Appleton Barnes and Amanda Elizabeth (McCaghren) Barnes.  Albert and Lucinda Rains were the parents of eleven children:

Bailey in DeKalb County, Alabama.  John was born on September 1, 1876.  Sarah (Rains) Bailey died on March 9, 1953 in Rainsville, Alabama and was buried there.  John Bailey died on January 4, 1964 and was buried in the Broadway Baptist Church Cemetery.  On July 27, 1902, John W. Rains married Bertha Estelle Hall in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Bertha was born on September 9, 1882 in Georgia and is the daughter of Stephen Hall and Rhoda (Stapp) Hall.  Bertha (Hall) Rains died on December 19, 1951 and John W. Rains died on March 4, 1967.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.

On October 16, 1904, Robert E. Rains married Sally E. Wright in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Sally was born on March 5, 1884 and is the daughter of Zack Wright.  Robert E. Rains died on December 11, 1924 in DeKalb County, Alabama and Sally (Wright) Rains died on November 17, 1951.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County, Alabama.  On December 2, 1906, William H. Rains married Allie Dean in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Allie was born on August 15, 1890.  Allie (Dean) Rains died on April 3, 1967 and William H. Rains died on November 9, 1972.  Both were buried in Henagar, Alabama.  On June 3, 1906, Mary A. Rains married Emory F. Breedlove in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Emory was born in 1885.  Emory Breedlove died in 1908 and was buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On December 18, 1910, Mary married a second time to William C. Cook in DeKalb County, Alabama.  William was born in 1865.  William C. Cook died in 1916 in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Mary (Rains) Cook died on September 13, 1918 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.

On January 13, 1907, Maude B. Rains married Harvey Linfield Goggans in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Harvey was born on August 9, 1887 in Haralson County, Georgia.  Maude (Rains) Goggans died on December 12, 1970 and was buried in Rainsville, Alabama.  Harvey Goggans died on December 2, 1982 and was buried in Fort Payne, Alabama.  Caldonia Rains died as a child on September 13, 1908 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  On July 12, 1908, Hassie Rains married Thomas Charles Edmondson in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Thomas was born on May 9, 1888 and is the son of Green Edmondson and Susan (Jones) Emondson.  Thomas Edmondson died on April 24, 1941 and Hassie (Rains) Edmondson died on September 2, 1969.  Both were buried in the New Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in DeKalb County, Alabama.

On May 5, 1912, Naomi B. Rains married Pleasant Harmon Oliver in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Pleasant was born on September 2, 1887.  Pleasant Oliver died on October 10, 1963 and Naomi (Rains) Oliver died on March 12, 1971.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  Berma J. Rains married Allison Mabron Chandler.  Allison was born on January 14, 1893 and is the son of Dan C. Chandler and Evaline Chandler.  Allison Chandler died on May 23, 1973 and Berma (Rains) Chandler died on September 15, 1986.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  Lester Rains died as a child on June 25, 1901 and was buried in the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.

HENRY NEWTON GREENE RAINS (1.8.11) is the son of Robert Rains and Sarah (Shelton) Rains.  Henry was born on August 10, 1863 in Groveoak, Dekalb County, Alabama.  On October 18, 1888, Henry Rains married Sarah Elizabeth Richey in Dekalb County, Alabama.  Sarah was born on July 22, 1871 in Groveoak, Alabama and is the daughter of Eleazor Newton Richey and Armenda Manerva (Liles) Richey.  Henry and Sarah Rains were the parents of eleven children:

Rains married James Edward Hall in DeKalb County, Alabama.  James was born on October 23, 1890 in Alabama and is the son of James Walton Hall and Lula I. (Persall) Hall.  James E. Hall died on December 31, 1961 and Sarah (Rains) Hall died on April 16, 1977.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  On August 24, 1914, Emma G. Rains married Irvin Alexander Oliver in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Irvin was born on August 18, 1890.  Irvin A. Oliver died on January 3, 1957 and Emma (Rains) Oliver died on July 25, 1979.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.

On December 24, 1922, Byron A. Rains married Eva D. Oliver.  Eva was born on September 4, 1896 in Groveoak, Alabama.  Byron A. Rains died on November 10, 1976 in Boaz, Alabama and Eva (Oliver) Rains died on June 4, 1988.  Both were buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On January 23, 1916, John B. Rains married Maudie Melissa Oliver in Fort Payne, Alabama.  Maudie was born on November 24, 1892 in Groveoak, Alabama.  John B. Rains died on June 2, 1975 and Maudie (Oliver) Rains died on April 21, 1981 in Albertville, Alabama.  Both were buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.

On December 18, 1921, Hubert Rains married Mary Bernice Hood.  Mary was born on November 12, 1902 in Leesburg, Alabama and is the daughter of Albert Watson Hood and Willie Ann Missouri (O’Neal) Hood.  Mary (Hood) Rains died on May 2, 1984 in Fort Payne, Alabama and Hubert O. Rains died on June 27, 1985 in Fort Payne, Alabama.  Both were buried in Fort Payne, Alabama.  On November 4, 1925, Bernice Rains married Bonnie Beatrice Bailey in Groveoak, Alabama.  Bonnie was born on February 5, 1910 in Muscadine, Alabama.  Bernice O. Rains died on November 21, 1985 in Collinsville, Alabama and Bonnie (Bailey) Rains died on June 12, 1986 in Whiton, Alabama.  Both were buried in Groveoak, Alabama.  On May 7, 1922, Eunice Rains married John Wilford Broyles.  John was born on July 31, 1897 in Groveoak, Alabama.  Eunice (Rains) Broyles died on December 25, 1988 and John W. Broyles died on March 18, 1991.  Eunice (Rains) Broyles was buried in the Mountain View Memory Gardens Cemetery in Fort Payne, Alabama.

Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveoak, Alabama.  Ova Rains married John Whitfield.  John was born on August 17, 1903.  John Whitfield died on June 11, 1965 and Ova (Rains) Whitfield died on September 16, 1980 in Henagar, Alabama.  Both were buried in the Henagar Baptist Church Cemetery in Henagar, Alabama.  On March 29, 1930, Annie Rains married Amos Benson Smith.  Amos was born on May 24, 1908 in DeKalb County, Alabama and is the son of Jesse F. Smith and Maggie (Murphey) Smith.  Amos Smith died on December 19, 1993 in Rome, Georgia and was buried in Rome, Georgia.
