SHELTON FAMILY HISTORY  4-263

NATHANIEL SHELTON (2) is the son of John Shelton and Catherine (Messer) Shelton.  Nathaniel was born on September 15, 1806 in Virginia.  According to the Family Bible, Nathaniel Shelton married Sally W. Mitchell on January 8, 1835.  Sally is the daughter of Hugh Mitchell and Sally (Holland) Mitchell.  Sally’s sister, Rebecca Mitchell, married Nathaniel’s brother, Noah Shelton (1.7).  On March 12, 1839, Nathaniel Shelton married a second time to Mahala Harper (22) in Marshall County, Alabama.  Mahala was born on September 7, 1818 in Tennessee and is the daughter of Jacob Harper and Darkes (Davis) Harper.  For additional information on the descendants of Jacob and Darkes Harper, see the sketch of Jacob Harper (21).  Nathaniel and Mahala Shelton were the parents of six children:

  Levi Shelton, b. 1839, Alabama
Mary Elizabeth Shelton (2.2), b. November 28, 1841, Jackson County, Alabama
John Harper Shelton, b. May 22, 1844, Jackson County, Alabama
William Martin Shelton (3), b. July 27, 1847, Jackson County, Alabama
Louisa Catherine Shelton, b. October 29, 1849, Jackson County, Alabama
Mahala Missouri Shelton (2.6), b. September 4, 1852, Jackson County, Alabama

From 1840 to 1850, Nathaniel and Mahala Shelton were living in Jackson County, Alabama.  Nathaniel Shelton died on April 12, 1855 in Jackson County, Alabama.  In 1860, Mahala (Harper) Shelton was living as head of household with her children in Jackson County, Alabama.  On November 11, 1860, Mahala (Harper) Shelton married a second time to Joseph Sanders in Jackson County, Alabama.  Joseph Sanders died on April 10, 1863.  On January 16, 1866, Mahala Sanders signed away her dowry rights on the land owned by her deceased husband (Joseph Sanders) so that the buyers of the land in the estate would have a clear title to the land.  The agreement was that the funds from the sale of the land and personal property would be set aside for her dowry rights.  The probate judge failed to do this and on September 29, 1869, Mahala Sanders filed suit for her dowry.  The final settlement of the Joseph Sanders’ estate was made on December 15, 1874, eleven years after his death.  In 1870, Mahala (Harper) Sanders was living in Jackson County, Alabama.  Mahala received for her dowry rights around $950.00 or about one-fourth of the distribution.  Mahala (Harper) Shelton/Sanders died on October 29, 1885 in Franklin County, Arkansas.  Levi Shelton died young.  John Harper Shelton died in February of 1858.  Louisa Catherine Shelton died on December 7, 1867.

MARY ELIZABETH SHELTON (2.2) is the daughter of Nathaniel Shelton and Mahala (Harper) Shelton.  Mary was born on November 28, 1841 in Jackson County, Alabama.  According to LDS Family Group Sheet submissions, Mary Shelton married Henry A. Saunder and Mary (Shelton) Saunder died on May 31, 1908.  This information was provided by descendants of Mary Shelton’s sister, Mahala (Shelton) Sellers.  According to descendants of Mary (Shelton) Sanders, Mary E. Shelton, born November, 1841, was the daughter of Nathaniel Shelton and married William Sanders (or John William Sanders).  This author feels that the connection between Mary Shelton and William Sanders is very probable.  However, this connection is based solely on family tradition from two different family lines (Mary’s and Mahala’s descendants) and there is not very much primary documentation supporting this connection.  Family tradition indicates that this marriage was brief and that William and Mary Sanders were the parents of one son:

  John William Sanders (2.2.1), b. March 7, 1863, Alabama

In 1870, Mary (Shelton) Sanders was living with her mother, Mahala (Harper) Sanders, in Jackson County, Alabama.  The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Arkansas substantiates that Mary (Shelton) Sanders had only one child.  Family tradition states that William Sanders, later remarried and had eight children.  In 1900, Mary (Shelton) Sanders and her son, John W. Sanders, were living in Montgomery County, Arkansas.  According to the LDS Family Group Sheets, Mary (Shelton) Sanders died on May 31, 1908.

On November 21, 1877, Hugh Lee Sellers and his wife, Missouri, their small son, James Robert Sellers, along with Hugh Lees father, Daniel Rice Sellers and family, his uncle Samuel S. Sellers and family, his aunt Mary Ann Sellers and her husband, Bird Jackson Kirtland and their family, his grandmother Jane Surratt Sellers and the families of William Jones, Milton H. Evans, Thomas W. Chandler, Francis M. Weldon, Patrick C. Haynie, James A. Cox, A. G. Bagwell, George W. Wilson, W. L. Marshall, all left the Southern States for Colorado.  They were all converts of the Mormon Church under the leadership of Elder John Morgan.  They arrived in Pueblo, Colorado by train.  It was very cold and they were tired and dirty from the trip, but their spirits were high.  They found temporary shelter in an old theater building.  Later they built barracks in the south part of Pueblo for their winter quarters.

It was here where their daughter, Ellen, was born to Hugh Lee Sellers and Missouri (Shelton) Sellers on December 30, 1877.  Bird Jackson Kirtland, who was injured in the Civil War, died and was buried in Pueblo.  The Sellers families took care of his wife and her six children and they also took care of Hugh Lees grandmother, Jane (Surratt) Sellers, who was seventy years old.  These families lived the united order and his father, Daniel Rice Sellers, was set apart as President.  They all pooled their money which totaled $409.84.

In the spring of 1878, they went by train to Fort Garland, Colorado where they employed a Mexican gentleman with an old decrepit, ancient appearing wagon and a span of Mexican ponies, to take them from Fort Garland, to the proposed settlement in the Los Cerritos area of Conejos County.  They loaded their things on the wagon and grandma Jane (Surratt) Sellers on top of the load and the rest of them walked.  They camped near the Conejos and San Antonio rivers.  Later the town of Manassa was surveyed and they moved there and built their homes.  Hugh Lee Sellers built a log house which is still standing.

The Saints put up a Co-op store and after the men began to work and raise crops, Hugh Lee bought the store and some land.  In Manassa, six more children were born to them and he sent four of his sons on missions.  On November 12, 1906, his wife Missouri (Shelton) Sellers died in Manassa, Colorado.  On October 7, 1909, Hugh Sellers married a second time to Jane Valentine and they were the parents of two children, Glenn Sellers and Leona Sellers.  Jane (Valentine) Sellers died on March 27, 1919.

Hugh Lee Sellers was on the school board for many years.  He sold school books and supplies at his store.  Hugh was in the Bishopric and held other positions in the Church.  He was an active member since the time he was baptized.  He did work in the temple for many of his relatives.  Hugh was crippled with arthritis but was always jolly and never complained.  He loved to sing the old time square notes.  He ran his store until the time of his death, on March 30, 1940 in Manassa, Colorado at the age of eighty-four.  Ernia Richard Juck Sellers never married and lived in Manassa, Colorado.
