PACE FAMILY HISTORY  5-169

WILLIAM PACE, JR. (15) is the son of William Pace, Sr. (14).  In 1815, a deed recorded in Scott County, Virginia transferred land from William Pace, Sr., deceased, to his son, William Pace, Jr.  This deed establishes that William Pace, Sr. had a son named William Pace, Jr.  In 1844, another deed recorded in Scott County, Virginia, lists William Pace of Jackson County, Alabama as the husband of Elizabeth Wininger.  Elizabeth was receiving property from her father, David Wininger.  This 1844 deed along with personal property tax lists and census records establish that William Pace, Jr. married Elizabeth Wininger, daughter of David Wininger, and that William moved from Scott County, Virginia to Jackson County, Alabama.  According to the birthplaces of the children of William and Elizabeth Pace, William and Elizabeth Pace lived in Virginia from 1816 to 1828 and lived in Alabama by 1832.

According to the 1850 census, William Pace, Jr. was born in 1790 in Virginia.  Not only does the 1844 deed establish that William Pace, Jr. married Elizabeth Wininger, but also the Certificate of Death of Linda Woosley indicates that her parents were William Pace, Jr. and Elizabeth Wininger.  Elizabeth was born in 1798 in Tennessee and is the daughter of David Wininger and Martha Wininger.  William’s marriage to Elizabeth Wininger establishes the author’s Wininger ancestry.  For additional information on the descendants of David and Martha Wininger, see the sketch of David Wininger (32).

William Pace, Jr. probably moved to Washington County, Virginia around 1814.  No Pace’s are listed in the following Washington County, Virginia personal property tax lists:  1804, 1805, 1806, 1809, 1810, 1811 and 1812.  William Pace first appears on the 1814 Washington County, Virginia tax list.  Scott County, Virginia was formed from Washington County, Virginia in 1814 and William Pace appears on the following Scott County, Virginia personal property tax lists:  1815, 1818, 1820, 1822, 1824, 1826 and 1828.  From 1840 to 1870, William and Elizabeth Pace were living in Jackson County, Alabama.  The children of William and Elizabeth Pace are documented in the estate papers of William Pace, Jr. probated in Jackson County, Alabama.  William and Elizabeth Pace were the parents of thirteen children:

Eliza Pace (15.1), b. August 13, 1815, Scott County, Virginia
Martha Pace (16), b. April, 1817, Scott County, Virginia
Mary Pace (15.3), b. 1820, Scott County, Virginia
David Pace (15.4), b. 1821, Scott County, Virginia
Catherine Pace (15.5), b. August 26, 1826, Scott County, Virginia
  Jackson Pace (15.6), b. 1828, Virginia
  Susan B. Pace (15.7), b. June 24, 1830, Alabama
  Edward Pace (15.8), b. 1832, Alabama
  Solomon Wininger Pace (15.9), b. 1836, Alabama
  Sarah E. Pace, b. 1838, Alabama
Malinda Pace (15.11), b. July, 1840, Jackson County, Alabama
Joseph Benton Pace (15.12), b. February 2, 1842, Jackson County, Alabama
Lucinda Pace, b. Jackson County, Alabama

William and Elizabeth Pace were both listed in the 1870 census of Jackson County, Alabama.  The inventory of the estate of William Pace, deceased, was dated September 12, 1878.  William Pace therefore died between 1870 and 1878 in Jackson County, Alabama.  Since Elizabeth is not listed in the probate records and she is not found in the 1880 census, it is assumed that she also must have died in Jackson County, Alabama between 1870 and 1878.
