John, for some years, operated a water-powered farmer’s feed grinding mill on Mill Creek at Port Elgin and also made apple cider and apple butter in season.  In 1907, John and two partners purchased land at Sauble Falls and bought a large generator made in Switzerland.  This power plant gave the town of Wiarton their first supply of electricity and was sold to households at a fixed price per bulb.  In 1928, Forshay Company of United States purchased the entire plant and about two years later they sold it to Ontario Hydro.  As result of this sale, John owned 1,200 acres of land along the Sauble River from Sauble Falls to the mouth on Lake Huron.  John gave away this land to avoid paying taxes but kept the water rights to operate his electric power plant.  Today this land is a Provincial Park.  It is still possible today to see the power plant ruins when visiting Sauble Falls.  John owned the first automobile in Port Elgin, being a Studebaker Touring car.  He also built by himself the large white brick homes in Port Elgin and on his brother’s farms.  They are standing today.  John also ran a steam powered boat which brought logs to the saw mill and delivered timber to the centers along the lake.  This boat burned in a fire.
