MASTER PUBLICATION  4-75

According a sketch entitled, “Children of William and Lucinda Womack,” by F. M. Womack, “Uncle Jesse Womack married a Perkins his first wife, she died in Jackson County, Alabama.  Uncle Jess died in Marshall County, Alabama - he was the father of Cousin Mary Gilliam and Cousin Levi Womack.  Uncle Jess Womack sometimes called (Green eye) was a very pecular man, you could hear him talking in common conversation almost a mile.  Soon after his first wife died he visited father, staid a few days.  He seemed to be greatly grieved on account of loseing his wife.  He said he had caught his horse every night after supper, since her death and would ride to the grave yard where she was buried, which was one mile from his home - hoping he might see her - he went back home from fathers and very soon thereafter I learned that Uncle Jess had courted and married another woman.  Uncle Jess had a large family of children, all respectable.  Many years before Uncle Jess died he had his coffin made.  The undertaker brought it home to him, he lay down in it to see how he liked, was very well pleased with it, he kept it up stairs, usually kept shelled corn, peas or beans in it.  I presume he was buried in it.”  Jesse Womack was the father of eight children:

  Asa M. Womack (1.3.1), b. 1827, Tennessee
Levi Berry Womack (1.3.2), b. December, 1832, Jackson County, Alabama
  Sina Womack, b. 1837, Alabama
  Martha A. Womack, b. 1839, Alabama
  Melvina C. Womack, b. 1844, Alabama
  George Chapman Womack (1.3.6), b. September 17, 1846, Alabama
  William R. Womack, b. 1849, Alabama
  Selenia C. F. Womack (1.3.8), b. August 17, 1852, Marshall County, Alabama

From 1850 to 1860, Jesse and Sabra Womack lived in Marshall County, Alabama.  According to the book, “Descendants of William Womack and Mary Jane Allen,” Jesse “Greeneye” Womack died around 1870 in Marshall County, Alabama.

In the book, “The Smith, Rains, Womack and Fricks Families,” Sabra’s maiden name is not mentioned as being Shelton.  Sabra is a very unusual name and John’s daughter, Sabra Shelton, was born in 1809 in Tennessee according to the Family Bible.  This is very close to being born in 1810 in Tennessee that is found in the Wilson book.  Additionally, it is known that John Shelton moved to Jackson County, Alabama by 1834 as the Family Bible states that John’s wife, Catherine (Messer) Shelton, died in Jackson County, Alabama in 1834.  Sabra’s brother, Nathaniel Shelton married Mahala Harper in Marshall County, Alabama in 1839 and Sabra’s sister, Sarah Shelton, married Robert Rains in DeKalb County, Alabama in 1843.  It also known that John and Catherine Shelton married in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1805 and later lived in Scott County, Virginia only a few miles from Tennessee.

It appears that Jesse Womack probably married Sabra Shelton in Jackson County, Alabama as Jesse’s first wife died in Jackson County, Alabama.  In 1850, Jesse and Sabra Womack were living in Marshall County, Alabama.  Further research of early Marshall County, Alabama and Jackson County, Alabama for Womack families may strengthen this connection.  According to Ann McDonald, Jesse Womack married a Miss Perkins and had four children:  Asa Womack,  Levi Womack,  Melvin Womack and George Womack.  She states that Jesse and his second wife, Sabra, had two more children:  William Womack and Selina Womack.

The World Family Tree has the Womack line that that married into the Shelton line.  There is a Jesse Womack (born 1803) who died in Jackson County, Alabama.  Jesse is shown to be the son of William Womack and Lucy (Womack) Womack.  No more is shown on the ancestry of William Womack but Lucy’s parents are shown as Thomas Womack and Nancy (Rice) Womack.  William and Lucy Womack had eleven children: Sarah Womack (born 1782); Isham Rice Womack (born 1789); Josiah Womack (born ca. 1790); Thomas Womack (born ca. 1790); Burton Womack (born ca. 1790); Abner Clemons Womack (born ca. 1790); William “Buck” Womack (born ca. 1790); Nancy Womack (born 1794); Levi Womack (born 1796); Jesse Womack (b. 1803); and Asa Marion Womack (born 1806).  Another family name is that Isham Rice Womack and his wife, Mary Ann (Stewart) Womack, had one daughter, Nancy Ann Womack (born 1813) who married George Washington Chapman (born 1810).  The World Family Tree also indicates that Jesse’s brother, Levi Womack, died in Jackson County, Alabama.  This additional information on Jesse Womack’s family tends to support Jesse Womack’s marriage to Sabra Shelton as Jesse Womack and his brother, Levi Womack, were shown to have lived in Jackson County, Alabama where Sabra’s parents and sibling definitely resided.

According to the book, “Descendants of William Womack and Mary Jane Allen,” Jesse Womack and several siblings in the Jackson County, Alabama area.  His brothers, Josiah Womack, William Womack, Abner Clemmons Womack, Levi Berry Womack and Asa Martin Womack all lived in Jackson County, Alabama at various times.  With a very unique name like Sabra, the time period being very close and the fact that much of Jesse Womack’s family lived in Jackson County, Alabama, all greatly strengthen the Shelton/Womack connection.  Further early research of Jackson and Marshall County, Alabama might further strengthen this connection.
