MASON BRADFORD SHELTON (9.2.1.1) is the son of William Franklin Shelton and Elizabeth (Wood) Shelton.  Mason was born on February 27, 1838 in Jackson County, Alabama.  Mason taught school in Jackson County, Alabama and adjoining counties for about ten years.  In 1862, Mason Shelton had a long and severe attack of sickness and upon recovering went to General Pillow at Huntsville who sent him to Dr. Stout at Chattanooga for assignment to some duty.  Dr. Stout sent him to Ringgold, Georgia to fill a place in one of the Confederate hospitals.  After serving as a nurse for sick and wounded, he was appointed private secretary to Dr. Curry, surgeon in charge of the Ford hospital, of which he became steward.  At his own request, he was then sent to Shelbyville, Tennessee and joined the Fourth Confederate Tennessee infantry.  Forty days after joining this regiment, he was with General Bragg on his famous retreat from Tennessee and at Winchester he was captured by Federal soldiers.  Not having donned the soldiers uniform, he was taken prisoner as a spy and was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio where he was kept prisoner for twenty-two months.  Being almost impossible proving that he was a spy, it was only through the intervention of United States Senator Powell, later Governor of Kentucky, that he was released.  President Abraham Lincoln himself signed Masons discharge papers.

After leaving Camp Chase, he went by railroad to Cincinnati and by steamboat to Henderson, Kentucky where he was given a job as a salesman by Soper and Dallam, merchants of that place and remained there for three months.  He then returned home to Jackson County and stayed with his parents a few days and then accepted a position in the store with his cousin, C. C. Shelton, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, remaining there until January 1, 1867.  While there, he met his future wife, Endora Pittman.  Mason then went west to the Rocky Mountains in search of gold and silver.  After nine years spent in search of gold and silver, meeting with the usual reverses and successes, he returned home, finding the lady that he had left still watching and waiting.  On February 23, 1875, Mason Shelton married Endora I. “Dora” Pittman in Jackson County, Alabama.  Mason and Dora Shelton were the parents of three daughters:

Shelton, Jr., and Dora sister, Annie Pickman, were living with them.  On December 23, 1880, he lost his store by a fire and then moved to Florence and formed a partnership with John H. Young, under the name of Shelton and Young.  A few months later, he opened another store in partnership with a Mr. Ragsdale, under the name of Shelton and Ragsdale.  After eighteen months of business with John Young, he sold his interest to Mr. Young and bought out Mr. Ragsdale after he retired in 1885.  Mason was one of the organizers of the Merchants Bank of Florence and became a vice-president of the bank and served as a member of the board of directors.

SHELTONS OF HAWKINS COUNTY, TENNESSEE
AND NEIGHBORING VIRGINIA COUNTIES

According to the Family Bible, John Shelton (1) married Catherine Messer in 1805 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.  This Hawkins County, Tennessee origin is supported by the fact that Catherine’s father, Christian Messer died in Hawkins County, Tennessee, leaving a will.  It is logical to believe that many of the Sheltons living in that area during the same period are probably related to John and his children.  Other Sheltons (born 1800 or earlier) living in Hawkins County, Tennessee were:

Ralph Shelton, r. 1790, Hawkins County, North Carolina
Polly Shelton, r. 1790, Hawkins County, North Carolina
Palatiah Shelton, r. 1795, Hawkins County, North Carolina
Jeremiah Shelton, r. 1797, Russell County, Virginia
Hezekiah Shelton, r. 1814, Hawkins County, Tennessee
Joseph Shelton, r. 1816, Washington County, Virginia

Most of these Sheltons appear to be children of Ralph Shelton and Mary (Daniel) Shelton, grandchildren of Ralph Shelton and Mary (Crispen) Shelton.  Ralph Shelton, II was born in 1709 (baptized on October 23, 1709 in Middlesex County, Virginia).  Ralph (born 1709) is the ancestors of thousands of Shelton families in the United States today.  On June 10, 1731, Ralph Shelton married Mary Daniel.  Ralph and Mary Shelton were the parents of at least eight children:

  John Shelton (8.1), b. ca. 1732
  Ralph Shelton, III (8.2), b. ca. 1735
  Palatiah Shelton (8.3)
  Eliphas Shelton (8.4), b. ca. 1739
  James Shelton (8.5)
  Hezekiah Shelton (8.6)
  Jeremiah Shelton (8.7)
  Azariah Shelton (8.8), b. 1747

Ralph Shelton and his second wife, Susannah Shelton, were the parents of four children:

  Easop Shelton (8.9)
  Abigail Shelton (8.10)
  Mary Shelton (8.11)
  Liberty Shelton (8.12)
