JOHN M. BRYAN (2.5) is the son of Samuel Bryan, Sr. and Margaret Bryan.  According to the 1850 census, John was born in 1805 in Tennessee.  John Bryan married Jane Moss.  Jane was born in 1814 in Tennessee and is the daughter of David Moss.  On October 28, 1845, John M. Bryan purchased 120 acres of land from William Kingston for the price of $900.00.  This land was situated in District 14 of Davidson County, Tennessee.  It is well established that the John Bryan living in Davidson County, Tennessee in 1850 is the son of Samuel and Margaret Bryan because Sarah Webb (born 1820) is listed in the census with John in 1850 and Sallie Webb is mentioned in the will of Samuel Bryan, Sr.  John and Jane Bryan were the parents of at least four children:

  Samuel Bryan, b. 1833, Tennessee
  William Bryan, b. 1836, Tennessee
Thomas Bryan, b. 1841, Davidson County, Tennessee

From 1840 to 1850, John and Jane Bryan were living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  On February 24, 1860, the administration settlement of John M. Bryan, deceased, was recorded in Davidson County, Tennessee indicating that John Bryan probably died in the early part of 1860.  George W. Bryan is listed as the administrator of the estate.  In 1860, Jane “Bryant” and two of her sons, George (born 1832) and William (born 1835), were still living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  In 1860, Elizabeth Pinkerton (born 1790 in North Carolina) was living with Jane.

MAGGY ANN BRYAN (2.7) is the daughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret Bryan.  On December 8, 1828, “Margary Ann” Bryan married Samuel W. Thompson in Davidson County, Tennessee.  They were married by Devin Edney.  Margary’s brother, Samuel Bryan, Jr. was married by “Levin” Edney.  Samuel is the son of Ephriam Thompson.  In 1830, what appears to be Samuel and Maggie Thompson were living in Williamson County, Tennessee.  In 1830, Samuel W. Thompson (born 1800 to 1810) was living what appears to be his wife (born 1790 to 1800) and one son (born 1825 to 1830).  In 1840, what appears to be Samuel W. Thompson was living in Bradley County, Tennessee.  Maggy (Bryan) Thompson may have died between 1830 and 1840 as the wife of Samuel Thompson was much younger than in 1830.  In 1840, Samuel Thompson (born 1800 to 1810) was living with what appears to be his wife (born 1810 to 1820).  In 1840, there was one son (born 1830 to 1835) and a second son (born 1835 to 1840).  It is not certain that these census listings (1830 and 1840) are the same Samuel Thompson that married Maggy Bryan in Davidson County, Tennessee, however, it is quite probable the correct person.

REBECCA BRYAN (2.8) is the daughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret Bryan.  Rebecca was born in 1807 in Tennessee.  On February 26, 1829, Rebecca Bryan married Joel P. Wiles in Williamson County, Tennessee.  Joel was born in 1805 in Virginia.  In 1840, Joel and Rebecca Wiles were living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  From 1850 to 1860, Joel and Rebecca Wiles were living in Lafayette County, Missouri.  Joel and Rebecca Wiles were the parents of at least nine children:

JANE “JENNIE” BRYAN (2.9) is the daughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret Bryan.  Jennie was born on October 22, 1780.  It is known that Samuel Bryan had a daughter, Jane Bryan, who married David Pinkerton (this is proven in the 1824 deed where Samuel Bryan gave “his son-in-law the said David Pinkerton and his daughter Jane Pinkerton” fifty-two acres of land).  A marriage license was issued on October 22, 1810 in Davidson County, Tennessee between David Pinkerton and “Jenny” Bryan.  This appears to be a good match for the marriage of Samuel’s daughter, Jane, to David Pinkerton.  David was born on February 20, 1787 and is the son of David Pinkerton and Betsy Pinkerton.  In 1830, there is a David Pinkerton (born 1790 to 1800) living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  However, there were known to be two David Pinkertons of approximately the same age (the unrelated one married Celia Barnes) living in Davidson County, Tennessee and therefore it is impossible to determine which Pinkerton appeared in this census record.  In 1840, there was a David Pinkerton (born 1780 to 1790) listed in the 1840 census of Davidson County, Tennessee.  This David Pinkerton appears to be too old to the man who married Jane Bryan but the ages that appear census records are known to become less reliable as the head of family becomes older.  David Pinkerton died prior to December, 1842 when property was sold from his estate as indicated in his settlement was recorded in Davidson County, Tennessee recorded on May 15, 1845.  Cash was paid to Samuel Pinkerton and another David Pinkerton.  “Ginny” Pinkerton received “her share of rent 1843 for $13.33 (the rent for 1843 was listed as $40.00 of income into the estate).  The record further states that ”the above settlement was made by and with Jane Pinkerton Admrx (?) October 26, 1844."  It appears that David and Jane Pinkerton were married for over twenty years and that they had children as Jane only received one-third of the rent for 1843.  According to deed, minute and Bible records, David and Jennie Pinkerton were the parents of eight children:

  Anna Pinkerton
  Eliza Pinkerton
  Mary Jane Pinkerton
  Samuel Pinkerton (2.9.4), b. June 17, 1818
  David C. Pinkerton (2.9.5), b 1822, Tennessee
  Margaret Pinkerton
  Joseph Pinkerton, b. 1827, Tennessee
  James Pinkerton

MASTER PUBLICATION  8-195

According to Bible records, David Pinkerton died on June 23, 1842.  This is definitely the David Pinkerton that married Jane Bryan because it is known that Jane Bryan’s husband (David Pinkerton) died shortly prior to December, 1842 according to probate records.  This Bible also implies that David Pinkerton had a brother, Joseph Pinkerton (who is probably the Joseph Pinkerton that married Elizabeth Bryan).  Another possible brother, Samuel Pinkerton, is not mentioned in this Family Bible.

There was definitely another David Pinkerton (born 1789 in Virginia) who married Celia Barnes, (born 1791 in Tennessee).  This David Pinkerton was not only the same age as the David Pinkerton (that married Jane Bryan) but also lived in Davidson County, Tennessee during the same period of time.  According to Barbara Thompson, David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) was a nephew of David Pinkerton that married Jane Bryan.  David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) is the son of James Pinkerton and Mary (Foster) Pinkerton.  Barbara Thompson states that James Pinkerton (who married Mary Foster) was the son of David Pinkerton (who married Betsy).  To further confuse the two men, David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) later lived in Greene County, Illinois where Thomas Allen and Margaret (Bryan) Allen, Jane Bryan’s uncle and aunt resided.  In 1835, David Pinkerton and wife, Celia, of Greene County, Illinois, sold land in Davidson County, Tennessee to Bartley M. Barnes, of Davidson County, Tennessee.  This deed was acknowledged by John Allen, Justice of the Peace in Greene County, Illinois, who is a first cousin of Jane (Bryan) Pinkerton.  It is also known that David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) had a sister, Mary Pinkerton, that married Jane Bryan’s first cousin, William David Allen, son of Thomas Allen and Margaret (Bryan) Allen.  On April 6, 1811, David Pinkerton married in Davidson County, Tennessee to Celia Barnes, daughter of Henry Barnes.  They had twelve children that lived to adulthood and many grand-children (well documented in a published book).  David Pinkerton (who married Celia Barnes) died on October 4, 1853 and Celia (Barnes) Pinkerton died on April 6, 1863.  Both died in Greene County, Illinois and were buried there in the Pinkerton Cemetery.

In 1850, Joseph Pinkerton and his wife, Sarah Pinkerton (born 1828, Tennessee), were living in Davidson County, Tennessee.  Mary Jane Pinkerton married Christopher B. Brooks.  Anna Pinkerton married Cager Stark.  Eliza Pinkerton married Joseph Spence and they had at least one son:  -  James Spence.  Margaret Pinkerton married Allen Pickard.
