ALLEN TURNER BROOKS (3.4) is the son of Williamson Brooks (3) and Susanah (Olliff) Brooks.  Allen was born on June 27, 1830 in Talbot County, Georgia.  In 1852, Allen moved to Crockett in Houston County, Texas.  He then moved to Austin County, Texas and then on to Washington County, Texas.  On March 15, 1855, Allen Turner Brooks married Helena Luco in Brenham, Texas.  Helena Luco was born on April 21, 1836 in Oldenburg, Germany and is the daughter of John Luco (originally spelled Luckoff) and Annie Sophia (Voglesang) Luco.  In the early 1840’s, Helena and her parents sailed with the Fisher colonists from Bramahaven, Germany to Texas.  While at sea, Helena’s sister, Annie, died of yellow fever and was buried at sea.  After John Luco died when Helena was only nine, she lived with Dr. McLean and received medical training at John Sealy Hospital.  At the age of eighteen, Helena began practicing medicine at Brenham, Texas.  From 1853 to 1913, she helped deliver more than 5,000 babies in Texas.  After Allen and Helena married, they moved to Fayette County, Texas.  From 1856 to 1858, they lived in Bastrop County, Texas.  From 1861 to 1864, they lived in Austin County, Texas.  On April 6, 1862, Allen Turner Brooks enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company A, Elmore Regiment.  Allen was on furlough when his Company participated in the Battle of Galveston.  Because of an eye infection, he continued his military service by hauling freight from Indianola to Houston.  In 1868, Allen and Helena Brooks moved to Hays County, Texas and settled on the Blanco River about four miles west of Wimberley.  After a flood in 1869, he moved to a place on Dry Cypress Creek about one mile from Jacob’s Well.  In April of 1870, Allen Turner Brooks was taken to San Antonio for treatment of an eye infection.  After removal of one eye, he was blind for more than three years.  He later regained enough vision to travel and work without assistance.  In 1870 when Allen was hospitalized for this eye infection, his children were living with their uncle, Francis Asberry Brooks (3), in Hays County, Texas.  From 1868 to 1900, Allen and Helena Brooks lived in Hays County, Texas.  Allen and Helena Brooks were the parents of eight children:

  Robert Franklin Brooks (3.4.2), b. November 28, 1858, Bastrop County, Texas

On January 5, 1912, Allen Turner Brooks died at his daughter’s (Sarah) home in Blair, Oklahoma.  On June 26, 1921, Helena (Luco) Brooks died at her son’s (Robert) home in Blair, Oklahoma.  Both were buried in the Blair Cemetery.  Willis Jordan Brooks died on September 9, 1880 and was buried in the Wimberley Cemetery near Wimberley, Texas.

JOHN WILLIAMSON BROOKS (3.4.1) is the son of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks.  John was born on Januaury 30, 1856 in Bastrop County, Texas.  In 1880, John was living with his parents in Hays County, Texas. John Williamson Brooks married Sallie (Strickland) Schultz.  John and Sallie Brooks were the parents of two children:

  Joseph Halbert Brooks, b. August, 1886, Texas

After Sallie’s death, John W. Brooks married Rena Emmons (born February, 1876 in Texas).  In 1900, John and Rena Brooks and Rena’s father, H. Emmons, were living in Hays County, Texas.  In 1910, John and Rena Brooks were living in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.  John and Rena Brooks were the parents of seven children:

In 1912, John W. Brooks was living in Grimes, Oklahoma.  John Williamson Brooks died on September 6, 1918 in Grimes, Oklahoma and was buried in Dempsey, Oklahoma.  Rena (Emmons) Brooks died on January 5, 1933 in Sayre, Oklahoma and was buried in Dempsey, Oklahoma.  John Henry Brooks married a woman whose first name was Leona and they had one son:  -  Carl Brooks.  John and Leona Brooks lived in Lawton, Oklahoma.  In January of 1910, Hal Brooks married a woman whose first name was Viola and they had six children:  -  Carol Brooks,  -  Linville Brooks,  -  Noble Brooks,  -  Vera Brooks,  -  Wayne Brooks,  -  Dale Brooks.  Hal and Viola Brooks lived in Houston, Texas.  Hal Brooks died on June 24, 1966.  Vera Brooks married a Mr. Proctor.  Annie Brooks burned to death in January of 1930 at Sayre, Oklahoma and was buried in Dempsey, Oklahoma.

Wimberley (born January 28, 1876 in Texas).  In 1900, Robert and Zilla Brooks were living in Hays County, Texas.  Robert and Zilla Brooks were the parents of five children:

It is not certain what Robert’s middle name was.  According to Susie Danforth, it was Franklin but according to Myrtle Ashley, it was Francis.  In 1910, Robert and Zilla Brooks were living in Jackson County, Oklahoma.  In 1912, Robert F. Brooks was living in Grimes, Oklahoma.  Zilla (Wimberley) Brooks died in 1944.  Robert F. Brooks died in 1944 in Blair, Oklahoma and was buried in the Blair Cemetery.  Ernie Brooks lived in Cheyene, Oklahoma.  Julia Brooks married Arthur Campbell.  Arthur and Julia Campbell have two children:  -  Donald Dudley Campbell,  -  Barbara Campbell.  Grace Brooks married Bill Starn.

ANNIE B. BROOKS (3.4.2.1) is the daughter of Robert Franklin Brooks and Zilla A. (Wimberley) Brooks.  Annie was born on September 23, 1896 in Texas.  Annie Brooks married Jess Conway Douglas (born July 23rd).  Jess and Annie Douglas were the parents of four children:

WYATT TURNER BROOKS (3.4.3) is the son of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks.  Wyatt was born on September 1, 1861 in Austin County, Texas.  According to the “Hays County Genealogical Quarterly,” Wyatt T. Brooks married Rebecca Green on August 18, 1888 in Hays County, Texas.  In 1900, Wyatt and his wife, Liara J. (Imest) Brooks, were living in Bastrop County, Texas.  In 1910, Wyatt and Liara Brooks were living in Hays County, Texas.  In 1920, Wyatt Brooks was living in Hays County, Texas.  Later, Wyatt Brooks married Lee (Clopton) Smith.  Wyatt and Lee Brooks had no children.  Wyatt Brooks died on August 18, 1943 in San Marcos, Texas and was buried in Wimberley, Texas.  At the time of Wyatt’s death, Lee (Clopton) Brooks was living in Wimberley, Texas.

FRANCIS ASBERRY BROOKS (3.4.4) is the son of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks.  Francis was born on May 31, 1864 in Austin County, Texas.  According to Susie Danforth, Francis Asberry Brooks married Ada Sehan and they had no children.  According to Myrtle Ashley, Francis Asberry Brooks married M. A. Clemons on August 31, 1890.  Myrtle also states that Francis had a son whose name is unknown.  Francis Asberry Brooks died on April 16, 1909 in Simmons City, Live Oak County, Texas.

SARAH AMELIA BROOKS (3.4.6) is the daughter of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks.  Sarah was born on November 22, 1872 in Hays County, Texas.  On June 14, 1891, Sarah Amelia Brooks married William Theophilus Lackey in Kyle, Texas.  William Lackey was born on June 24, 1864 in Virginia.  In 1900, William and Sarah Lackey were living in Hays County, Texas.  William and Sarah Lackey were the parents of eight children:

In 1914, Christine Lackey married Ocran Gardner and they had one son:  -  James Verdil Gardner, b. June 16, 1915.  In November of 1953, Christine married a second time to Charlie Rogers.  Charlie Rogers died on December 26, 1966 and Christine (Lackey) Rogers died on April 10, 1981.  On October 26, 1927, Leo Lackey married Grace Hall and they had one son:  -  Leo Wayne Lackey, b. July 26, 1928.  William Leo Lackey died on April 4, 1981 in La Mesa, Texas.

MYRTLE LACKEY (3.4.6.2) is the daughter of William Theophilus Lackey and Sarah Amelia (Brooks) Lackey.  Myrtle was born on April 10, 1894 in Hays County, Texas.  On April 28, 1912, Myrtle Lackey married Edwin W. Ashley.  Ed and Myrtle Ashley were the parents of four children:

  Alma Aultna Ashley, b. February 25, 1913, Blair, Oklahoma
  Opal Amelia Ashley (3.4.6.2.2), b. May 16, 1916, Blair, Oklahoma
  Georgia Audrey Ashley, b. February 9, 1921, Headrick, Oklahoma

Myrtle (Lackey) Ashley wrote a short manuscript in 1944 on her Brooks ancestry.  Much of this book was based on her manuscript and a more detailed description of her manuscript may be found in the introduction to this book.  Alma Ashley married a Mr. Wilkinson and they have three adopted children:  -  Kenny Wilkinson,  -  Beatrice Wilkinson,  -  Glen Wilkinson.  Alma (Lackey) Wilkinson died on October 17, 1975 in Monroe, Louisiana.  Kenny Wilkinson lives in Houston, Texas.  Beatrice “Bee” Wilkinson lives in Vincennes, Indiana.  Glen Wilkinson died in a car accident in 1980 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

On December 3, 1941, Audrey Ashley married Edmund F. Hingle.  Eddie and Audrey Hingle have three children:  -  Eileen Hingle,  -  Wayne Hingle,  -  Carla Hingle.  Eddie Hingle served in the Marines during World War II.  Audrey has been Postmaster of the Postal Service in Port Sulfur, Louisiana since 1975.  Eileen Hingle has one son.  Wayne Hingle has three daughters and one son.  Carla Hingle has one son.  Elsie Ashley married Richard Warren.  Richard is a graduate of Annapolis and served during World War II and retired as a Commander.  Richard and Elsie Warren have one daughter and live in California.

OPAL AMELIA ASHLEY (3.4.6.2.2) is the daughter of Edwin W. Ashley and Myrtle (Lackey) Ashley.  Opal was born on May 16, 1916 in Blair, Oklahoma.  On May 13, 1933, Opal Ashley married Charles Yundt.  Charles and Opal Yundt lived in Freeport, Texas for one year and since 1935 they have lived in Port Sulphur, Louisiana.  Charles Yundt worked for many years with Freeport Sulfur Company and, as of 1978, Opal was a Regular Clerk at the Post Office at Port Sulfur.  Charles and Opal Yundt are the parents of two children:

  Norma Yundt, b. April 28, 1934
  Ashley Yundt, b. September 3, 1938

Norma Yundt is a graduate of the University of Houston.  Norma Yundt married Paul Butler and they had two children:  -  Angela Elizabeth Butler,  -  Barney Charles Butler.  On May 18, 1963, Ashley Yundt married Patricia Hicks and they have two daughters:  -  Sherrie Yundt, b. August 8, 1964,  -  Tara Yundt, b. June 9, 1970.  Ashley served four years in the Navy and, as of 1978, he and his family live in Belle Chasse, Louisiana.

Naomi “Bobbie” Walker married Delma M. Burden.  Delma and Bobbie Burden had six children:  -  Terresa “Tesa” Burden,  -  Neta Faye Burden,  -  Jody Burden,  -  Pence “Tinkie” Burden,  -  Tammy Burden,  -  Thacker Burden.  Tesa is married and lives in the Washington, D. C. area.  Neta Burden married David Middleton and they had one son and one daughter named Stephanie.  They have since divorced and Neta now lives in Idaho.  Jody Burden lives in the Los Angelos, California area.  Tinkie Burden lives in El Centro, California.  Tammmy Burden married David Jansen and they had one son:  -  Caleb Jansen.  David and Tammy Jansen live in Blair, Oklahoma.

Johnny Franklin Walker and Charlotte were later divorced.  Johnny Walker married a second time to Nema Gardner.  Johnny adopted her son of her previous marriage, Eldon “Wesley” (born November 28, 1961).  Johnny and Nema Walker had one son:

  Stephen Ray Walker, b. February 7, 1964

As of 1981, Johnny and Nema Walker were living in Blair, Oklahoma.  Donna Walker married Jack Willard and they had two children:  -  Julie Anna Willard, b. September 22, 1971,  -  Shawn Willard, b. October 18, 1975.  Jack and Donna Willard were later divorced and Donna lives in Sacramento, California.

John Francis Lackey died on May 14, 1966 in Headrick, Oklahoma and was buried in Blair, Oklahoma.  Helen Lackey married Lawrence Melvin Calkins and they had two children:  -  Larry Jon Calkins, b. August 3, 1928,  -  Janice Kay Calkins, b. September 24, 1933.  In 1968, Larry Calkins married Terrie Manning and they have one son:  -  Travis Jon Calkins, b. July 17, 1977.  In 1979, Janice Calkins married Mathew “Mat” Anderson.  John Lamac Lackey died in 1934 and was buried in the Blair Cemetery.

VIRGIA MAY LACKEY (3.4.6.8) is the daughter of William Theophilus Lackey and Sarah Amelia (Brooks) Lackey.  Virgie was born on July 20, 1909 in Blair, Oklahoma.  In July of 1927, Virgie Lackey married Earl Jeter.  Earl and Virgie Jeter were the parents of at least three children:

  Billie O’Brian Jeter, b. January 6, 1932
  Mary Beth Jeter, b. January 15, 1941

Virgie (Lackey) Jeter married a second time to Bob Chastain.  As of 1982, Virgie (Lackey) Chastain lives in Wheeler, Arkansas.  Earlene Jeter married a Mr. Howard and they have three children:  -  Timothy Evan Howard,  -  Ginger Lee Howard,  -  David Howard.  Billie Jeter later changed his middle name to Earl.  Billie Jeter is the father of four children:  -  Earl Jeter,  -  Nannette Jeter,  -  Brent Jeter,  -  Brad Jeter.  Nannette Jeter married a Mr. Dollar.  Mary Beth Jeter married a Mr. Clem and they have one daughter:  -  Carrie Lee Clem.

SUSIE SOPHIA BROOKS (3.4.7) is the daughter of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks.  Susie was born on May 9, 1876 in Hays County, Texas.  After receiving a teacher’s certificate, Susie taught in a one room school at Bluff Springs, Texas.  Her salary for this job was twenty-nine dollars per month.  After teaching at this one room school and two others, Susie attended San Marcos State Normal for one year where she received another teaching certificate.  After teaching near Grimes, Oklahoma, Susie moved back to Hays County and continued to teach there.  Susie Brooks first married Will Mays.  Susie married a second time to William Caleb Danforth (born on April 12, 1875).  From 1912 to 1914, William and Susie Danforth lived in San Marcos, Texas, Oklahoma and Wimberley, Texas.  William and Susie Danforth were the parents of three children:

William Danforth carried mail from Wimberley to San Marcos and then back six days each week.  Susie taught at Jacob’s Well and was the principal at the Wimberley School, the Grimes, Oklahoma School and then the Sunny Point School.  William and Susie Danforth moved to Carter, Oklahoma and then moved back to Wimberley and then lived in the Texas counties of Milam, Guadalupe and Caldwell.  In 1932, Susie received a Bachelor of Arts degree.  William Danforth died on April 6, 1938 in Wimberley, Texas.  Much of this book was based on a 1946 manuscript written by Susie Danforth and a more detailed description of her manuscript may be found in the introduction to this book.  In 1963, the book “Wimberley Legacy” was published containing several articles written by Susie Danforth.  In 1976, at the age of 100 years, Susie Danforth was the author of the book “One Hundred Years in Wimberley.”  Susie (Brooks) Danforth died on March 8, 1979 and was buried in the Wimberley Cemetery.

Lily Danforth received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos, Texas and taught school for twelve years.  In 1942, Lily Danforth married James Noel Duce.  Lily was a private secretary for Major Blaine at Camp Hulen, Texas and was a Junior Hostess at the Army Entertainment Center at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.  She was also a private secretary for Major Daughty at the San Marcos Army Air Field in San Marcos, Texas.  Lily was involved in a car accident in September of 1940.  Lily Danforth died on August 9, 1946 as a result of an injury received in that car accident and was buried in the Wimberley Cemetery in Wimberley, Texas.

BESSIE LEE DANFORTH (3.4.7.1) is the daughter of William Caleb Danforth and Susie Sophia (Brooks) Danforth.  Bess was born on September 20, 1909 in San Marcos, Texas.  Bess Danforth graduated from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos, Texas and taught school for twelve years.  On November 27, 1934, Bess Danforth married Clarence Michael Halm.  Clarence was born on February 7, 1910 in Kingsberry, Texas and is the son of Oscar Joseph Halm and Margaret (Klein) Halm.  During World War II, Bess received a radio broadcast ovation for her service as a WAC enlisting officer for Mason County, Texas.  Bess is an artist, art teacher, and antique collector.  Bess is also a member of the Pi Gamma Mu and Delta Kappa Gamma honor societies. In 1936, she designed the Texas Independence Centennial Air Mail Stamp and Cachet.  Clarence Halm is a member ot the Elks Club and Lions Club and was president of the Chamber of Commerce of Mason, Texas.  Clarence sells International Harvester farm implements and Pontiac cars.  Clarence and Bess Halm are the parents of two children:

Clarence Halm died on April 21, 1955.  As of 1978, Bessie Halm lives in Kingsland, Texas where she owns and operates an antique and gift shop.  Michael Halm died on the same day that he was born.  On August 9, 1965, Allen Halm married Cynthia Woerner.

VIVIAN DANFORTH (3.4.7.3) is the daughter of William Caleb Danforth and Susie Sophia (Brooks) Danforth.  Vivian was born on May 23, 1913 in Grimes, Oklahoma.  Vivian received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos, Texas and she taught school for twelve years.  Vivian then entered the Civil Service at Kelly Field.  Vivian also took Navy training courses at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.  After her Navy training courses, she became a WAVE and was given an assignment in the Bureau of Navy Personnel in Washington, D.C.  Vivian was then transferred to the Educational Division of the Naval Hospital at San Diego, California.

On January 31, 1946, Vivian Danforth married (over the telephone from Mason, Texas to Honolulu, Hawaii) Obie E. Newcomb.  Obie was a Warrant Officer in the United States Marine Corps, Fifth Division and was stationed in Honolulu at the time of their marriage.  In February of 1946, Vivian sailed to Honolulu on the S. S. Arthur Middleton.  While there, they had their wedding confirmed in the St. Andrews Cathedral in Honolulu.  They returned to the United States in October of 1946.  Vivian was stationed at the Navy Headquarters in Washington, D. C. and Obie was stationed at Quantico, Virginia.  Later, they both lived in Arlington, Virginia.  Obie and Vivian Newcomb had no children and were later divorced.  As of 1978, Vivian Newcomb is a retired Commander in the United States Naval Reserve and lives in Kingsland, Texas.

ALLEN BATTEUS BROOKS (3.4.8) is the son of Allen Turner Brooks and Helena (Luco) Brooks.  Barney was born on November 15, 1879 in Hays County, Texas.  Barney Brooks married Maud Ship.  Barney Brooks married a second time to a woman whose first name was Louise.  Barney married a third time to Fern Viner.  Allen and Fern Brooks were the parents of four children:
