JOHN ARRINGTON (31)

John Arrington is the oldest known Arrington ancestor of the authors.  John was born between 1760 and 1762 in London, England.  Family tradition indicates that he immigrated to America at the age of nineteen.  On March 1, 1782, John Arrington enlisted as a private in Jones Company, Tenth Regiment, North Carolina Continental Line.  Another version of John Arrington’s military service states that John came to America as a British soldier and in their march across Carolina after the Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina, became ill, fell asleep by the wayside and awakened to find the British gone.  He decided not to rejoin them, supposedly fearing court martial.  He made his way to the Stevenson home and told James, Sr. that he wanted to leave the British Army and stay in America, whereupon he was taken in and remained, worked for his lodging and married Mary Stevenson before the year (1781) was out!  This author has not investigated either version to substantiate these claims of military service.

On December 27, 1783, John Arrington married Mary Stevenson (72) in Wilkes County, North Carolina.  Mary was born between 1765 and 1766 in Maryland and is the daughter of James Stevenson and Sarah (Kelly/OKelly) Stevenson.  For additional information on the descendants of James and Sarah Stevenson, see the sketch of James Stevenson (71).

In 1790, John Arrington purchased land from William Sharpe on the fourth fork of Rockey Creek for fifty pounds.  Between 1795 and 1800, John received four land grants from the state.  This land was situated in either Iredell or Wilkes County, North Carolina.  In February of 1804, John was appointed to a jury in Iredell County and in 1818, he was appointed a Justice in Wilkes County.  John Arrington and his wife, Mary, were both mentioned in the will of Mary’s father in July of 1817 in Iredell County, North Carolina.  In 1820, John Arrington and his wife were listed in the census of Wilkes County, North Carolina.  In 1822, John Arrington sold 327 acres of land in Wilkes County, North Carolina (formerly Iredell County) to Quillen Williams of Iredell County.  This land consisted of three tracts:  100, 200 and 27 acres, all situated on the South Fork of Rockey Creek.  John and Mary Arrington were the parents of four children:

Abel Arrington (31.1), b. March 3, 1787, Iredell County, North Carolina
