CASEY FAMILY HISTORY  2-195

ABNER CASEY (8.2)

Abner Casey is the ancestor of many Casey families now residing in Arkansas.  Abner Casey, Jesse E. Casey and Ambler Casey are the ancestors of more than half of all Casey families that have reside in Arkansas by 1910.  There is some possibility that Abner Casey (born 1786) is related to the authors ancestor, Ambler Casey (born 1790).  Both were known to have lived in Roane County, Tennessee and both migrated to Arkansas.  This section is included in hope of some day proving a connection between these two Casey lines as well as to sort out the various Casey lines to better understand how many Casey lines lived in Tennessee and Arkansas.  This section will not be carried down for all desecendants and will only include a brief amount on Casey women that married into other lines and will not be a complete genealogy beyond 1900.  The Abner Casey line is well documented in the 1964 manuscript by George and Abner Casey.  This section primarily based on their work with other input from other descendants of Abner Casey.

According to the 1964 manuscript written by George and Abner Casey, Abner Casey was the son of Jesse Casey.  This would make Abner Casey (born 1786) be an uncle to both Ambler Casey (born 1790) and Jesse E. Casey (born 1797).  The 1860 census of Newton County, Arkansas indicates that Abner was born in South Carolina in 1787, the 1850 census of Newton County, Arkansas indicates that Abner was born in 1786 in South Carolina and the 1840 census of Johnson County, Arkansas indicates that Abner was born between 1780 and 1790.  Abner appears to have a wife (born 1780 to 1790), three sons (born 1825 to 1830).

According to the 1964 manuscript by George and Abner Casey, Abner Casey married Elizabeth Bowen who was born in 1782.  Soon after his marriage, Abner Casey, with other members of the Casey family moved to Georgia, but remained in Georgia only a few years and then moved to Washington County, Virginia.  They settled on the North Fork of the Holston River near the Tennessee Virginia line where they lived until 1810 when they moved to Tennessee and settled in Roane County.  From 1811 to 1838, there is evidence of an Abner Casey living in Roane County, Tennessee as shown by several legal documents.  There is also evidence of an Abner Casey living in Rhea County, Tennessee from 1823 to 1830 and evidence of an Abner Casey living in McMinn County, Tennessee from 1829 to 1835.

According to the 1964 manuscript by George and Abner Casey, in 1835, Abner Casey with his family, several of his sons and their families and many of his neighbors and their families, moved on west and settled in Johnson County, Arkansas on Mulberry River near where Oark is now located.  Abner Casey was an experienced miller and millright.  While living in Johnson County, he built a water mill on land owned by his son, Turner.  In 1838, he and two or three of his sons and their families moved to Buffalo River in what is now Newton County, Arkansas and settled in what is now known as the Boxley community.  About 1840, he built and operated a watermill at Boxley Springs, one of the first watermills built in Newton County.  After operating this for a few years, he sold it to Samuel Whitley.  A mill on this same site was operated until a few years ago.

2-196  INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

According to the 1964 manuscript by George and Abner Casey, Abner and Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey were the parents of the following children:

  Jesse Casey, b. 1805, Georgia
  Turner Casey, b. 1805, Georgia
  Marion Casey
  Levi Casey
  Anthony Casey
Polly Casey, b. February 26, 1813, Roane County, Tennessee
Abner Ellsberry Casey, b. 1820, Roane County, Tennessee

According to the 1964 manuscript by George and Abner Casey, there was another daughter that married a man by the name of Sams.  They had two sons, Jason and Marion.  We were not able to locate members of the Sams family.  Abner and his wife, Elizabeth, were both enumerated in the 1850 census.  They are both buried in the Buffalo Cemetery in Newton County.  This cemetery is located a few miles above Parthenon.  Apparently Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey died between 1850 and 1860 in Newton County, Arkansas.  In 1860, Abner Casey and what appears to be his wife, Margaret Casey (born 1788 in Tennessee), were living in Newton County, Arkansas.

Fortunately, there appears to be a partial Family Bible record of the Abner and Elizabeth Casey family.  This record (abstract only) was originally obtained from Norma (Martin) Trammell, but the author of this publication was unable to gain information about the source of this information.  According to Art Brown and Josephine Hodge, they obtained a copy from Emma Casey (1879 - 1974).  They further state that the Bible was in the possession of Marshall L. Casey, but its current location is unknown.  These two sources have minor variations but are obviously from the same source.  According to this Bible record, Abner and Elizabeth Casey were the parents of nine children:

  Turner Casey (8.2.1), b. July 8, 1805
  Susie Casey, b. October 12, 1807
  John R. Casey, b. November 12, 1809
  Pleasant Casey (8.2.3), b. December 12, 1810, Tennessee
Polly Ann Casey (8.2.4), b. February 26, 1813, Roane County, Tennessee
  Johnson Casey
  Annie Casey
Abner Ellsberry Casey (8.2.8), b. 1820, Roane County, Tennessee
  Jessie Tipton Casey (8.2.9), b. October 31, 1824

According to George and Abner Casey, Abner Casey also had a son named, Levi Casey.  Others believe that Levi was the son of John and Anna Casey that died in Greene County, Missouri and there is much documentation supporting this connection.  Additionally, Levi Casey was not found in the Bible record as well, further discounting the possibility that Levi Casey was the son of Abner Casey and Elizabeth (Bowen) Casey.  For additional information on the descendants of Levi Casey, see the sketch for Levi Casey (8.2.1).
