CHARLOTTE GREER CHARTER (31) is the oldest known Charter ancestor of the authors.  Charlotte was born in 1800 in Virginia.  Charlotte Charter married Samuel Bryan, both direct ancestors of the authors.  For additional information on the descendants of Samuel and Charlotte Bryan, see the sketch of Samuel Bryan (3).  There are conflicting accounts of Charlotte’s middle and last name.  A 1948 letter from Robert E. Bryant states that “Samuel Bryant married Charlotte Greyer Charter.”  According to “Marriages of Davidson County, Tennessee,”  Samuel Bryan married Charlotte Charlton.  A 1947 letter from Cornelia (Moore) Redfield states that “Samuel married Charlotte G. Charter.”  The book, “Century Review of Maury County, Tennessee,” shows that William DeMoss Bryan’s mother was Charlotte G. (Charter) Bryan.  Several family group sheets by Martha (Mobley) McGill show that Samuel Bryan married Charlotte Greer Charter.

According to a 1957 letter from Martha (Mobley) McGill, Charlotte Charter had a sister named, Ellen.  Ellen Charter married Gilbert Nichols and they had at least two sons:  Henry Gilbert Nichols (born October 3, 1806) and Nehemiah Nichols (born 1808).

8-428   INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

MORROW FAMILY HISTORY

This author has become convinced that William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow are the parents Margaret Morrow, wife of Samuel Bryan (2), all four individuals being direct ancestors of this author.  It is further believed that Margaret Morrow was previously married to a Mr. Steel prior to her marriage to Samuel Bryan in 1784.  There are two major legal documents that support this connection (the will of William Morrow and the marriage bond of Margaret Steel to Samuel Bryan).  Further supporting this connection are the names of immediate family members of Samuel and Margaret Bryan.  The places of residence for descendants of these two lines (Bryan and Morrow) also support this connection.  The will of William Morrow was written in Orange County, North Carolina in 1807 and clearly states that William Morrow had a daughter, Margaret “Bryen”.  The will of William Morrow mentions:  sons - William Morrow (received land), James Morrow (received land) and John Morrow (John received no property but the will mentions John’s daughter and John’s wife as enhiriting one slave); daughters - Elizabeth Andrews, Margaret Bryen, Jane Pickhard (all received money from the estate).  This will also mentions Janey Parkes Morrow whose relationship is not extremely clear (it appears that Janey is probably the granddaughter of William Morrow and the daughter of John Morrow and his wife, Jane Saray Morrow); executors were sons William Morrow and James Morrow and John Thompson (a neighbor and probably the future father-in-law of Jane Morrow, granddaughter of William and Jane Morrow); witnesses were - Robert Graham, William Graham and John Thompson.  The marriage bond for the marriage of Samuel Bryan and Margaret Steel on August 11, 1784 in Orange County, North Carolina clearly establishes that a Samuel Bryan married a woman named Margaret.  This marriage bond was paid by John Morrow (very likely the brother of Margaret Morrow) and Samuel Bryan (future husband of Margaret).  John Morrow’s economic obligation for the marriage of Samuel and Margaret Bryan further supports the case for Margaret being Margaret Morrow.  The family names given to children of Samuel Bryan and Margaret (Morrow) further strengthen this connection.  Two older sons of Samuel Bryan and Margaret (Morrow) Bryan were:  Henry “Morrow” Bryan and William “Park” Bryan.  Margaret’s father was a Morrow and the maiden name of Margaret’s mother was Parks.

There is a John Morrow that resided approximately five miles south of the land owned by Samuel Bryan and Samuel Bryan’s father, John Bryan, in Rowan County, North Carolina.  This John Morrow resided in Rowan County, North Carolina during the same timeframe that Samuel Bryan lived there.  It is not certain how this John Morrow is related Margaret Morrow - but this is certainly the Morrow relative that introduced Margaret Morrow to her future husband, Samuel Bryan (they lived five miles from each other).  Many other descendants of William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow (as well as many other Morrow lines) migrated with the descendants of siblings of Margaret (Morrow) Bryan, descendants of siblings of her husband, Samuel Bryan and descendants of Samuel Bryan and Margaret (Morrow) Bryan.  John Morrow signed his will in Rowan County, North Carolina on September 14, 1815 and mentions:  oldest sons, William Morrow and John Morrow; son Allin Morrow; son Thomas Morrow receives land adjacent to James Orton (neighbor of John Bryan) and William Butler, son Arthur Morrow to “have still and vessels,” Joseph Morrow to have 280 acres of land; daughter Jane Morrow, wife of James Davis, Sr.; daughter Elizabeth Morrow, wife of James Davis, Jr.; daughter Nancy Morrow; daughter Rebecca Morrow.  Witnessed by Samuel Little (neighbor of John Bryan) and Thomas Morrow.  Also, Joseph Morrow (son of John Morrow) signed his will in Rowan County, North Carolina on April 5, 1816 and mentions:  mother, Elizabeth Morrow; sister Nancy Morrow; brother Allen Morrow; brothers Thomas Morrow and Arthur Morrow; brother William Morrow; sister Jane (Morrow) Davis; sister Elizabeth (Morrow) Davis; sister Rebecca Morrow.  Executors were Thomas Morrow and Arthur Morrow and witnesses were Benjamin Bean and Nancy Renshaw (neighbor of John Bryan).  This verifies and enhances information concerning the family of John Morrow established in his 1815 will.

BRYAN FAMILY HISTORY   8-429

In 1790, John Morrow received a land grant on the north bank of the South Yadkin River in Rowan County, North Carolina (now the southwest corner of present day Davie County, North Carolina - about five miles south of John Bryan’s land grant and Samuel Bryan’s land purchase).  Nearby neighbors included:  Joseph Orton, John Beeman, Patrick Hughey, Thomas Bean, Andrew Tygert and John Vanclieve.  John Morrow appears in the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Rowan County, North Carolina.  Originally it was thought that this John Morrow would be the son of William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow, but closer examination of the actual loose will of William Morrow implies that this John died prior to 1807 and that his wife was Jane Saray and John had one daughter - Janey Parkes Morrow.  John Morrow (of Rowan County, North Carolina) died around 1815 and Joseph Morrow (son of John Morrow) listed his mother as Elizabeth.  Unfortunately, John Morrow, son of William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow, died prior to 1807, therefore, John could not write a will in 1815.  Also, John Morrow, son of William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow, appears to have married Jane Saray which is not consistent with the will of Joseph Morrow (son of John Morrow of Rowan County, North Carolina) that states that his mother was named Elizabeth.  Further research needs to be done to clarify the relationship of this key person (John Morrow of Rowan County, North Carolina) to the author’s ancestor, Margaret (Morrow) Bryan.

It is also known that the Morrow and Bryan families sought new land together in major migrations from Rowan County, North Carolina to Davidson County, Tennessee, Maury County, Tennessee and Greene County, Illinois.  While in Greene County, Illinois, at least six Morrow individuals married into the author’s Bryan / Allen line (their relationship to the author’s Morrow line has not established to date).  There are also known intermarriages between these Bryan and Morrow lines: - Jane Morrow (daughter of William and Jane Morrow) married Alexander Pickard.  Alexander and Jane Pickard had a son, George M. Pickard, who married Nancy Bryan (2.12), daughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret (Morrow) Bryan and later married a second time to Margaret Ortan (2.10.2), a granddaughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret (Morrow) Bryan.  It is known that some of the Morrow families of Greene County, Illinois originated from Rowan County, North Carolina.  In 1835, Jane (Morrow) Davis, daughter of John and Elizabeth Morrow, moved from Rowan County, North Carolina to Greene County, Illinois with her husband James Davis.  On June 29, 1822, the son of John and Elizabeth Morrow, John Morrow, of “Grean” County, Illinois sold 150 acres of land granted to his father, John Morrow, in Rowan County, North Carolina on November 16, 1790.  Also, George M. Pickard and Nancy Bryan married in Davidson County, Tennessee and later resided in Greene County, Illinois.  Elizabeth Morrow, sister of Margaret Morrow who married Samuel Bryan (2), married James Andrew and moved to Davidson County, Tennessee around 1800.  It is believed that there numerous other relationships between these two family lines (Bryan and Morrow) that have not yet been discovered in this early stage of this author’s research of his Morrow line.

WILLIAM MORROW (51)

According to the tombstones of William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow, William Morrow was born in 1734 and his wife, Jane Parks Morrow was born in 1731.  The tombstone indicates that they were born in Ireland (this is a conflict with most other accounts of their origin).  The 1807 will of William Morrow establishes that William Morrow was the father of six children and other information:

   William Morrow, Jr. (enhirited land)
   James Morrow (enherited land)
   Elizabeth (Morrow) Andrews (received cash)
   Margaret (Morrow) Bryen (received cash)
   Jane (Morrow) Pickhard (received cash)
John Morrow (father of Janey Parkes Morrow)
Janey Parkes Morrow (daughter of John Morrow)
Jane Saray Morrow (mother of Janey Parkes Morrow)

This will also implies that Janey Parkes Morrow was the daughter of John Morrow and his wife, Jane Saray Morrow (will is not extremely clear or legible for this connection).  Janey Parkes Morrow was to receive one slave and in case of her death, her mother Jane Saray Morrow, was to receive the slave from the estate.  This will also implies that John Morrow died prior to this will be written in 1807 (since he received no enhiritance and both his wife and daughter received property directly from William Morrow’s estate).  According to the Ancestral File, the family of William Morrow is as follows: - William Morrow was born in 1739 and was from Lunenburg County, Virginia.  William is the son of Daniel Morrow (born 1705) and Diana Morrow (born 1709).  William Morrow married Jane Parks.  Jane was born around 1739 and was from Prince Edward County, Virginia.  William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow were the parents of five children:

BRYAN FAMILY HISTORY   8-431

William Morrow, Jr., b. April 15, 1767, Orange County, North Carolina
James Morrow, b. 1767, Fayetteville, North Carolina
John Morrow, b. 1756, Fayetteville, North Carolina
Elizabeth Morrow, b. January 27, 1752, Fayetteville, North Carolina
Jane Morrow, b. 1754, Fayetteville, North Carolina

The Ancestral File and World Connect Project include siblings of William Morrow (born 1739) as well as additional ancestors of William Morrow (born 1739).  Research of these siblings and ancestors is currently considered beyond the scope of this publication (until the connection between Margaret Morrow and Samuel Bryan can be better verified and the family of William Morrow and Jane (Parks) Morrow can be more thoroughly verified.  Obviously, there are conflicting dates in the above accounts and two children that are missing from the will of William Morrow.  There are three birthdates in the 1750’s yet William Morrow and Jane Parks were supposedly both born in 1739.  This would require that William and Jane Morrow to have children at age thirteen, fifteen and seventeen - a red flag from a genealogical point of view.  A better estimate would be that William Morrow and Jane Parks were born a few years earlier or that their first few children were born a few years later.  According to Randy Tanner, William and Jane Morrow’s daughter, Jane Morrow, was married in 1792 and that Jane Morrow was born in 1774.  This suggests that Jane Morrow was eighteen years of age when she married Alexander Pickard (not twenty years earlier in 1754).  The birthdates of the children of William and Jane Morrow’s daughter, Elizabeth Morrow, also appear to be inconsistent.  The Ancestral File states that her first two children, Nancy Andrew and William Andrew, were born in 1772 and 1774 respectively.  The next two children were born in 1784 and 1786, five children born in the 1790s and two were born after 1800.  The last child, Elizabeth Andrew, was born in 1802 when Elizabeth would have been fifty years of age - a red flag from a genealogical point of view.  Again, the birthdate of Elizabeth Morrow appears to earlier than it should be (even though there is an exact birthdate which suggests a family Bible or tombstrone inscription).  John Morrow had one younger son, Arthur Morrow, that was born in 1789.  John would been forty-three years of age - believable but still at a more advanced age that most men were still fathering children.  However, the 1800 census record of John Morrow in Rowan County, North Carolina support earlier birthdates (the 1800 census indicates that John Morrow was born prior to 1755).  Based on the above information, it is believed that the first three children of William and Jane Morrow were born much later than shown in the Ancestral File and that the exact birthdate of Elizabeth Morrow is very questionable.  Based on this information, it is believed that William and Jane Morrow were the parents of seven children (order of children and birthdates are subject to change with additional research):

Elizabeth Morrow (51.1), b. ca. 1759, North Carolina
Margaret Morrow (52), b. ca. 1760, North Carolina
John Morrow (51.3), b. North Carolina
William Morrow, Jr. (51.4), b. April 15, 1767, North Carolina
James Morrow (51.5), b. ca. 1769, North Carolina
Janey Morrow, b. ca. 1771, North Carolina
Jane Morrow (51.6), b. ca. 1774, North Carolina

8-432   INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES

According to their tombstones, Jane (Parks) Morrow died on November 31, 1794 in Orange County, North Carolina and William Morrow died on November 13, 1807 in Orange County, North Carolina.  According to the Ancestral File, both were buried in the Morrow Cemetery in Orange County, North Carolina.  Margaret Morrow first married a Mr. Steel prior to 1784.  In 1784, Margaret (Morrow) Steel married a second time to Samuel Bryan in Orange County, North Carolina, both are direct ancestors of this author.  For additional information on several thousand descendants of Samuel and Margaret Bryan, see the sketch of Samuel Bryan (2).
