BROOKS FAMILY HISTORY   7-335

ROBERT WRIGHT BROOKS (3.5) is the son of Williamson Brooks (3) and Susanah (Olliff) Brooks.  Robert was born on January 21, 1833 in Talbot County, Georgia.  In 1860, Robert Brooks was living near his brother, John, and his sister, Mary, in Austin County, Texas.  On December 19, 1867, Robert Brooks married Amelia Ogg in Montgomery County, Texas.  Amelia was born on August 11, 1842 in Georgia and is the daughter of John Thomas Ogg and Martha (Fulscher) Ogg.  In 1870, Robert and Amelia Brooks were living in Washington County, Texas.  From 1880 to 1900, they were living in Lee County, Texas.  Robert and Amelia Brooks were the parents of at least six children:

   William H. Brooks, b. July 31, 1870, Texas
   Robert E. Brooks (3.5.3), b. 1873, Texas
   Francis Asbory Brooks (3.5.4), b. April 15, 1875, Texas

   Grover W. Brooks, b. November 14, 1884, Lee County, Texas

In 1879, Robert W. Brooks was Master of the Masonic Lodge in Giddings, Texas.  Robert Wright Brooks died on December 21, 1907 and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.  In 1910, Amelia (Ogg) Brooks was living in Lee County, Texas.  Amelia (Ogg) Brooks died on April 13, 1924.  Both were buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.  Willie H. Brooks died on October 30, 1890 and was buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Lee County, Texas.  James M. Brooks died on November 19, 1889 and also was buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery.  Grover Brooks never married.  Grover Brooks died on April 20, 1962 and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.

LUCY THEOPHILUS BROOKS (3.5.1) is the daughter of Robert Wright Brooks and Amelia (Ogg) Brooks.  Lucy was born on December 13, 1867 in Texas.  On January 14, 1891, Lucy Brooks married Clayton Byard Hosea in Lee County, Texas.  Clayton was born on December 25, 1856 in Brenham, Texas and is the son of Shadwick Samuel Hosea and Luvinda (Sample) Hosea.  Clayton had been previously married to Elizabeth Bozarth.  Clayton’s father, Shadwick Hosea, served several terms as mayor of Brenham, Texas.  C. B. and Lucy Hosea were the parents of five children:

In 1900, C. B. and Lucy Hosea were living in Lee County, Texas.  C. B. Hosea farmed near Shady Grove, Lee County, Texas until 1905.  He was made superintendent of the compress at the Giddings Cotton Compress and served there until 1920, when he was employed by the Texas Cotton Association.  In 1923, C. B. Hosea retired and moved to League City, Texas and remained there until his death.  Clayton Hosea died on December 31, 1931 in Houston, Texas and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.  Lucy (Brooks) Hosea died in San Antonio, Texas on March 10, 1937 and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.  Curtis Hosea served as a conductor for the Southern Pacific Railroad for many years.  Curtis Hosea never married.  Curtis Hosea died on May 27, 1971 in Austin, Texas and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.

On October 8, 1918, Herbert Hosea married Pansy Scott and they had one daughter:  -  Elaine Hosea.  Herbert and Pansy Hosea were later divorced.  On December 24, 1925, Herbert Hosea married a second time to Lola Mueller of Lexington, Texas and they had one daughter:  -  Lola Juanita “Lajaun” Hosea.  Herbert was employed by the Humble Pipe Line Company in Houston, Texas for about thirty-five years.  Herbert Hosea died on November 15, 1980 in Conroe, Texas and was buried in the Lawndale Forest Park Cemetery in Houston, Texas.  Elaine Hosea married John Bowen and they had two children:  -  John Bowen, Jr.,  -  Wanda Bowen.  Elaine (Hosea) Bowen died in the 1950’s.  Wanda Bowen married Jerry Morgan and as of 1982, lives in Georgetown, Texas.  Lajuan Hosea married Dick Vigneault and lives in Mayo, South Carolina.

ROBERT LEROY HOSEA (3.5.1.2) is the son of Clayton Byard Hosea and Lucy Theophilus (Brooks) Hosea.  Roy was born on March 16, 1893 in Giddings, Texas.  On July 8, 1917, Roy Hosea married Blanche Hurst of Giddings, Texas.  Roy and Blanche Hosea were the parents of at least one daughter:

Roy Hosea entered the banking business in San Antonio, Texas at a Morris Plan Bank and later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Roy was next associated with the Trinity State Bank in Fort Worth, Texas.  He moved to Dallas, Texas and was employed by the Grove State Bank, of which he became executive vice-president and where he served twenty years.  Roy was the founder and president of the Pleasant Grove Kiwanis Club.  Roy Hosea died in December of 1969 in Dallas, Texas and was buried in Dallas, Texas.

Kathryn Hosea married James Brewer Simms (born June 19, 1914) and they had three children:  -  Carolyn Simms,  -  James Robert Simms,  -  Kathryn Ann Simms.  James and Kathryn Simms both died on May 29, 1966 and were buried in Houston, Texas.  Carolyn Simms married David Edgar and they have three children:  -  Marcia Edgar,  -  David Edgar, Jr.,  -  Matthew Edgar.  As of 1982, David and Carolyn Edgar live in Richmond, Texas.  On May 11, 1979, James Simms married Leah Zwernemann near Lake Buchanan, Texas.  Leah is the daughter of Ewald Zwernemann and Toleta (Holden) Zwernemann.  Jim and Leah Simms have one daughter:  -  Brittany Rae Simms, b. October 11, 1979, Austin, Texas.  Jim Simms, Jr. is a veterinarian and as of 1982, lives in Austin, Texas.  Kathryn Simms married Cyrus Jones and they have one son:  -  Morgan Simms Jones, b. May 29, 1982.  As of 1982, Cyrus and Kathryn Jones live in Austin, Texas.

CLARICE MYRTA HOSEA (3.5.1.3) is the daughter of Clayton Byard Hosea and Lucy Theophilus (Brooks) Hosea.  Clarice was born on August 26, 1896 in Giddings, Texas.  On August 24, 1913, Clarice Hosea married in Giddings, Texas to Pleasant Alan Phears of Dime Box, Texas.  Ples was born on May 31, 1892 in Dime Box, Texas and is the son of William Henry Phears and Mary Ann (Wood) Phears.  Ples and Clarice Phears were the parents of three children:

   Mary Lucy Phears, b. February 6, 1916, Dime Box, Texas
   Pleasant Alan Phears, Jr., b. October 4, 1918, Dime Box, Texas
   Vera Mae Phears, b. February 25, 1922, Dime Box, Texas

Ples Phears, Sr. died on June 16, 1981 in Austin, Texas and was buried in the Lawndale Forest Park Cemetery in Houston, Texas.  As of 1982, Clarice (Hosea) Phears was living in Austin, Texas.  On July 7, 1932, Mary Phears married Travis Lionel Land (born February 4, 1913) and they had one son:  -  Travis Kenneth Land, b. January 4, 1933, Houston, Texas.  Mary (Phears) Land died on May 8, 1950 in San Antonio, Texas and was buried in the Lawndale Forest Park Cemetery in Houston, Texas.  On November 6, 1954, Kenneth Land married Barbara Anne Bull in San Antonio, Texas.  Barbara is the daughter of Allen George Bull and Dorothy (Snipes) Bull.  Kenneth and Barbara Land have one son:  -  John Kenneth Land, b. October 5, 1963, Corpus Christi, Texas.  As of 1982, Kenneth and Barbara Land were living in Dallas, Texas.

On September 30, 1936, Ples Phears, Jr. married Irma Hargis in Bizbee, Arizona and they had two children:  -  John Clayton Phears,  -  Patti Ann Phears.  Irma (Hargis) Phears died around 1940.  On January 8, 1944, Ples Phears, Jr. married a second time to Julia Tanko in Colorado Springs, Colorado and they had three children:  -  Robert A. Phears,  -  Beverly Phears,  -  Pleasant Alan Phears, III.  As of 1982, Julia (Tanko) Phears lives in Houston, Texas.  John Phears lives in Tombstone, Arizona.  Patti Phears married Don Lynch and they have two sons:  -  Donny Lynch,  -  Clifford Lynch.  Don and Patti Lynch live in Grand Junction, Colorado.  Robert Phears and his wife, Janice, live in Katy, Texas and have one daughter:  -  Crystal Phears.  Beverly Phears married Floyd Fikes and lives in Houston, Texas.  Floyd and Beverly Fikes have three children:  -  Gina Fikes,  -  Martin Fikes,  -  Connie Fikes.  Pleasant Alan Phears, III and his wife, Rachel, live in Houston, Texas and they have one daughter:  -  Sabrina Juliann Phears.  Ples Phears, Jr. died on January 5, 1970 in Houston, Texas and was buried in the Lawndale Forest Park Cemetery in Houston, Texas.  On March 17, 1946, Vera Phears married Howard T. Lee in Houston, Texas and they have one son:  -  Adam H. Lee.  As of 1982, Howard and Vera Lee live in Austin, Texas.

LUCILE AMELIA HOSEA (3.5.1.5) is the daughter of Clayton Byard Hosea and Lucy Theophilus (Brooks) Hosea.  Lucile was born on December 22, 1910 in Giddings, Texas.  On October 23, 1930, Lucile Hosea married William Hobert Fowler in Houston, Texas.  William was born on November 21, 1900 in Kennett, Missouri.  William and Lucile Fowler were the parents of two children:

   Curtis William Fowler, b. June 25, 1938, San Antonio, Texas

William H. Fowler died on August 12, 1958 in Fort Worth, Texas and was buried in Houston, Texas.  On October 29, 1965, Lucile (Hosea) Fowler married a second time to Milton W. Lewis of Avon, New York.  As of 1982, Lucile (Hosea) Lewis was living in Roswell, New Mexico.  On August 21, 1954, Delores “Dody” Fowler married Patrick Edward Green in San Antonio, Texas.  Patrick was born on August 14, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas and is the son of Patrick Henry Green and Gladys (Schuchart) Green.  Pat and Dody Green have five children:  -  Shaunna Marie Green, b. ROBERT E. BROOKS (3.5.3) is the son of Robert Wright Brooks and Amelia (Ogg) Brooks.  Robert was born in 1873 in Texas.  On April 26, 1893, Robert Brooks married Mary F. Anderson in Lee County, Texas.  Robert and Mary Brooks were the parents of at least two children:

   Gertrude Brooks
   Addie Brooks

Robert Brooks died prior to 1916.  Gertrude Brooks married a Mr. Mission.

FRANCIS ASBORY BROOKS (3.5.4) is the son of Robert Wright Brooks and Amelia (Ogg) Brooks.  Frank was born on April 15, 1875 in Texas.  On January 24, 1900, Frank A. Brooks married Alice Beulah Vick in Lee County, Texas.  Beulah was born on February 4, 1882 in Texas.  In 1900, Frank and Beulah Brooks were living in Lee County, Texas.  Frank and Beulah Brooks were the parents of at least four children:

Frank Brooks, Sr. was killed in a railroad accident in Milam County, Texas on August 10, 1908 and was buried in the City Cemetery in Giddings, Texas.  Beulah (Vick) Brooks died on October 31, 1959 and was buried in the City Cemetery in Giddings, Texas.  Bertie Brooks died as a small child on July 13, 1903 and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.  Clyde Brooks died as a small child on December 3, 1904 and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.  On November 20, 1940, Frank Brooks, Jr. married Lena Mary Dorough in Dallas, Texas.  Frank and Lena Brooks have two children:  -  Mary Judith Brooks, b. October 29, 1943,  -  Don Frank Brooks, b. March 8, 1947.  As of 1982, Frank Brooks, Jr. was living in Dallas, Texas.  Judy Brooks married Ted L. Martin and they have one son:  -  Theodore Roy Martin, b. March 3, 1965.  Ted and Judy Martin were later divorced.  In 1977, Judy married a second time to Charles Warren Ferguson in Dallas, Texas and they currently live in San Antonio, Texas.  Don Brooks married Anne Lorch and they currently have no children.

BESSIE LEE BROOKS (3.5.4.3) is the daughter of Francis Asbory Brooks and Alice Beulah (Vick) Brooks.  Bessie Lee was born on January 18, 1905.  Bessie Lee received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston.  On August 26, 1925, Bessie Lee Brooks married Milton Worley McGee in Waco, Texas.  Milton was born on August 20, 1903 in Bryan, Texas and is the son of Irwin Green McGee and Lillie (Worley) McGee.  Milton received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University and a Master of Education degree from the University of Texas.  Milton is a practicing Certified Public Accountant and Bessie Lee is a retired teacher.  Milton and Bessie McGee are the parents of two children:

Margaret Alice McGee received a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University.  On August 22, 1959, Margaret McGee married Ray Joe Saunders in Houston, Texas.  Ray received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston and is President and Chairman of the Board at Heights State Bank in Houston, Texas.  Joe and Margaret Saunders have three daughters:  -  Alice Lee Saunders, b. SARAH ANN ELIZABETH BROOKS (3.6) is the daughter of Williamson Brooks (3) and Susanah (Olliff) Brooks.  Sarah was born on September 17, 1835 in Talbot County, Georgia.  On January 4, 1855, Sarah Brooks married William P. Gates.  William Gates had previously married Elzeny S. Gates on July 25, 1847 and had two children:  Elizabeth Catherine Gates (born January 8, 1849 and died on January 29, 1873) and Mary Elzeny Gates (born January 2, 1851 and died January 23, 1875).  Elzeney S. Gates died on October 8, 1852.  William and Sarah Gates were the parents of three children:

   John Hiram Gates, b. August 18, 1857, Texas
   Susanna W. Gates, b. January 4, 1859, Texas

William P. Gates died on August 21, 1858.  In 1860, Sarah (Brooks) Gates was living in Austin County, Texas.  On October 22, 1861, Sarah (Brooks) Gates married a second time to George Frank Shelburne.  Frank and Sarah Shelburne lived at Hempstead, Texas.  Frank and Sarah Shelburne were the parents of seven children:

In 1880, Frank and Sarah Shelburne were living in Austin County, Texas.  George Frank Shelburne died on April 4, 1888.  Sarah (Brooks) Shelburne died on August 6, 1914 and was buried in the Hempstead Cemetery.  John Gates died young on February 20, 1858.  On December 24, 1879, Susie Gates married Edward S. Hodge and they had one son:  -  William Edward Hodge, b. November 27, 1880 and d. April 17, 1888.  On September 28, 1899, Susie (Gates) Hodge married a second time to Jules Pommier (born June of 1863 in France).  Jules and Susie Pommier had no children.  In 1900, Jules and Susanna Pommier were living in Waller County, Texas where Jules was a tailor.  Jules Pommier died on March 11, 1926 and Susie (Gates) Pommier died on April 8, 1947.

Franklin Shelburne died on May 21, 1888.  George Shelburne died on May 17, 1916.  Virginia Shelburne died on July 17, 1876.  Claude Shelburne died on November 11, 1881.  In 1900, Sallie Shelburne was living in Waller County, Texas with the Thomas Sutters family and was employed as a dressmaker.  On November 29, 1903, Sally Shelburne married George W. Campbell and they had one son:  -  George W. Campbell, Jr. who died as a child on August 17, 1917 by accidently hanging himself with a rope.  George W. Campbell, Sr. died on July 18, 1916.  Sally (Shelburne) Campbell later married a Mr. Colby.  Sally (Shelburne) Colby was buried in Brenham, Texas.

THEODOSIA E. GATES (3.6.1) is the daughter of William P. Gates and Sarah (Brooks) Gates.  Doshia was born on October 5, 1855 in Texas.  On January 19, 1881, Doshia Gates married James A. Norwood and they had three children:

   George W. Norwood, b. March 3, 1885, Texas
   Maggie Norwood, b. August, 1887, Texas

In 1900, Theodosia (Gates) Norwood and her three children were living in Waller County, Texas.  Doshia (Gates) Norwood died on March 21, 1952.

NANCY ANN SHELBURNE (3.6.4) is the daughter of George Frank Shelburne and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (Brooks) Shelburne.  Nancy was born on August 30, 1862 in Texas.  On February 27, 1883, Nancy Shelburne married Jesse Frazier and they had three children:

Jesse Frazier died on December 22, 1889.  In 1900, Nancy (Shelburne) Frazier and her three children were living in Waller County, Texas.  Nancy (Shelburne) Frazier died on January 13, 1937.

CYNTHIA BELL FRAZIER (3.6.4.1) is the daughter of Jesse Frazier and Nancy Ann (Shelburne) Frazier.  Cynthia was born on November 3, 1883 in Texas.  Cynthia Frazier married a Mr. Fowler and they had three daughters:

Cynthia (Frazier) Fowler died on July 17, 1951.  Ruby Fowler married Ellis Hutchins and they have four children:  -  Jack Hutchins,  -  Joy Hutchins,  -  Pat Hutchins,  -  Johnny Hutchins.  As of 1981, Ellis Hutchins was living in Hempstead, Texas.

HILDRED MARGARET FRAZIER (3.6.4.3.2) is the daughter of Jesse Pete Frazier and Mittie (Faulk) Frazier.  Hildred was born on May 25, 1914 in Texas.  On August 16, 1931, Hildred Frazier married Willie Doc Garner and they had two children:

Hildred and Willie were later divorced.  Hildred married a second time to James Shepard Harrison and they had no children.  James Shepard Harrison died on January 18, 1970 and was buried in Brenham, Texas.  Joan Garner married Donald Edward Wimberly and they had three children:  -  Dee Ann Wimberly, b. December 14, 1953,  -  Donald Edward Wimberly, Jr., b. August 9, 1958,  -  Richard John Wimberly, b. February 1, 1962.  Donald Wimberly, Jr. married Beatrice Sandoval and they have one daughter:  -  Amanda Gail Wimberly, b. January 25, 1981.  Richard Wimberly married Alamalyn Lois McCoy and they have one daughter:  -  Stefanie Lyn Wimberly, b. April 18, 1981.

CALPURNIA MAY SHELBURNE (3.6.7) is the daughter of George Frank Shelburne and Sarah Ann Elizabeth (Brooks) Shelburne.  Callie was born on May 4, 1874 in Texas.  On June 13, 1888, Callie Shelburne married Robert R. Davidson (born February, 1862 in New York) and they were the parents of three children:

   Roy Davidson, b. November, 1891, Texas
   Robbie Davidson, b. January, 1893, Texas

In 1900, Robert and Callie Davidson were living in Waller County, Texas.  Robert Davidson died on August 17, 1902.  Calpurnia (Shelburne) Davidson married a second time to a Mr. Yarbrough.  Calpurnia (Shelburne) Yarbrough died on April 19, 1938.

MARTHA ELIZA BROOKS (3.8) is the daughter of Williamson Brooks (3) and Susanah (Olliff) Brooks.  Martha Eliza was born on June 22, 1840 in Georgia.  In 1856, Eliza Brooks married John H. Burnett.  John and Eliza Burnett were the parents of two children:

   John H. Burnett, Jr.

John H. Burnett and Martha (Brooks) Burnett were divorced around 1865 in Austin County, Texas.  It is interesting to note that “Wimberley’s Legacy” states that Martha “was a widow” when she married Willis Ferguson and “History of McLennan, Falls, Bell and Coryell Counties, Texas” states that “Mrs. Burnett died in 1864" prior to John Burnett’s second marriage in 1867.  John H. Burnett, Sr. married again in 1867 to Mahala Davis and they had six children:  Maggie Burnett, Abbie E. Burnett, James H. Burnett, Willie Burnett, H. J. Burnett and Lillie M. Burnett.  On February 26, 1867, Eliza Brooks married a second time to Willis Hayden Ferguson in Washington County, Texas and immediately moved to Hays County, Texas where Willis had bought land.  Willis was born on September 15, 1829 in Kentucky and is the son of Reason Ferguson (born 1807, Virginia) and Susanna (Harvey) Ferguson (b. 1808).  A detailed account of the Ferguson family can be found on pages 79 through 83 of the book ”Wimberley’s Legacy."  Willis and Eliza Ferguson were the parents of three children:

In 1870, Willis and Martha Ferguson were living in Hays County, Texas.  Martha Eliza (Brooks) Ferguson died on May 18, 1871 and was buried in the Wimberley Cemetery.  On May 23, 1872, Willis Ferguson married again to Mrs. Susan (Moon) Driskill (born July 31, 1842, Texas) in Hays County, Texas and they had two children:  Lillie Lila Ferguson (born March 11, 1873, Texas) and Tula May Ferguson (born May 7, 1881, Texas).  Susan Driskill was the widow of William Rufus Driskill and they had at least three children:  Joseph William Driskill (born 1862), Josephine “Dollie” Driskill (born 1864) and Susan E. “Bettie” Driskill.  In 1880, Willis Ferguson and his second wife were living in Hays County, Texas.  In 1900, Willis H. Ferguson was living alone in Hays County, Texas.  Willis Ferguson died on August 26, 1901 and Susan (Moon) Ferguson died on December 27, 1903.  Both were buried in the Wimberley Cemetery near Wimberley, Texas.  Joann Burnett drowned in the Blanco River in the summer of 1872.  John H. Burnett, Jr. died prior to 1867.

SUSAN OLIVE FERGUSON (3.8.3) is the daughter of Willis Hayden Ferguson and Martha Eliza (Brooks) Ferguson.  Susan was born on March 31, 1868 in Texas.  On March 22, 1899, Susan Ferguson married her first cousin, Jasper Louis Gilbert.  Louis was born on March 13, 1862 in Dewitt County, Texas and is the son of Pleasant Lee Gilbert (born 1840, Texas) and Berthania Thurman (Ferguson) Gilbert (born 1837, Kentucky).  Berthania’s brother, Willis Hayden Ferguson married Susan’s mother, Martha Eliza Brooks.  Jasper served two years as a Texas Ranger (1881 and 1882).  Louis and Susan Gilbert were the parents of seven children:

In 1920 Jasper and Susan Gilbert were living in Kent Couty, Texas.  Jasper Louis Gilbert died on June 20, 1925 in Clairemont, Kent County, Texas.  Susan Olive (Ferguson) Gilbert died on February 4, 1958 in Fisher County, Texas.  Hayden Gilbert never married.  Louis Hayden Gilbert died on January 13, 1975 in Kent County, Texas.  On July 1, 1923, Berthania Gilbert married Charles Lemuel Davis in Abilene, Texas.  Charles Davis died on February 14, 1978 and Berthania (Gilbert) Davis died on April 19, 1979.  Both died in Rotan, Texas.  Ruby Gilbert never married.  Ruby was Postmaster at Clairemont, Texas for 24 years (1948 to 1972).  As of 1982, Ruby Gilbert was living in Kent County, Texas near Clairemont, Texas.  Robert Gilbert was the father of at least two children:  -  Robert Louis Gilbert, Jr., b. July 9, 1944,  -  Roger Weldon Gilbert, b. February 16, 1951.  Robert Louis Gilbert, Jr. is not married.  On November 25, 1972, Roger Gilbert married Cheryl Ann (Laurence) Flint.  Cheryl was previously married and had one daughter, Jenna Leigh Flint (born February 28, 1969 in Albuquerque, New Mexico).  Jenna was adopted by Roger Gilbert in 1973.  Roger and Cheryl Gilbert have one son:  -  Eric Scott Gilbert, b. July 9, 1973, Webster, Texas.

George Gilbert served sixteen years in the Military Service and served in World War II.  George Lord Gilbert died on July 14, 1974 in Brady, Texas.  Oscar Gilbert was the father of at least two daughters:  -  Sidney Ann Gilbert, b. December 9, 1940,  -  Sharon Sue Gilbert, b. October 11, 1947.  On October 24, 1963, Sidney Ann Gilbert married Wayne Birchfield in Cleburne, Texas and they have three children:  -  Curtis Wade Birchfield, b. August 9, 1966, Cleburne, Texas,  -  Angela Waynette Birchfield, b. January 5, 1971, Cleburne, Texas,  -  Kevin Owen Birchfield, b.
